Background

There is currently a significant demand for certified teachers and this is likely not change for many years to come. The Department of Educational Studies is an exciting environment where we are specialised in educating teachers.                                                                        

The department currently has approximately 120 employees, but we need to expand further. We involved in all teacher education programmes at Karlstad University. Studying to become a teacher is to choose a future-proof profession, and together we can contribute to the education of new teachers who can make a difference.

We are now searching for one or more senior lecturers for one or more of the teacher education programmes the department is involved in. We contribute to the education of preschool teachers, extended school teachers, primary school teachers, secondary school teachers, special needs teacher and vocational teachers. We are also tasked with a significant amount of contract education, such as the Principal Education. We are now looking for candidates with the relevant experience in any or several of these fields. Your individual experience and profile will be the basis for within which of these fields you will be offered employment.

Duties  

Duties may include the following:

  • Teaching bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral courses, both in the form of distance teaching and on-campus teaching.
  • Teaching contract education courses.
  • Course coordination and programme leadership.
  • Supervising bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral students.
  • Examiner duties in bachelor’s and master’s courses and programmes.
  • Contributing to a vibrant and active research environment and participate in the department’s research seminars.
  • Active participation in the development of the discipline.

Research and continual professional development of at least 20% of working hours is included in the position. The possibility of more time for research is dependent on the acquisition of external research funding.

We find it vital that the person appointed will be largely physically present in our environment at Karlstad University.

Qualification requirements                                                                                    

To be eligible for the position of senior lecturer, applicants are required to hold a PhD in Educational Work or another field relevant to the position. A completed course in higher education pedagogy is also a requirement. In special circumstances, the course in higher education pedagogy may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment (see the Higher Education Ordinance, chap. 4, sect. 4). The position requires a good command of Swedish and English.

Assessment criteria

In the selection process, the following assessment criteria will be taken into account. Please note that all qualifications that you wish to refer to must be verified through grades, certificates or equivalent. Unverified qualifications will not be considered and your entire application may be revoked.

Special weight will be given to:  

  • the ability to employ a science-based and well-considered pedagogical approach in education and development activities. Teaching expertise is assessed, for example, through documented skills in and experience of planning, implementation, evaluation and educational development at different levels.
  • research experience. Research expertise is assessed based on range, depth, urgency, originality, scope and level of independence.
  • experience of teaching at university level.

Considerable weight will be given to:                                                                        

  • experience in teaching or other work at preschool, primary school or upper-secondary school.
  • successful applications for research funding and experience of external collaboration.
  • personal qualities such as the ability to cooperate, a positive attitude towards colleagues and students, and taking initiative.

Valuable qualifications are:

  • a degree in education, relevant to the position.
  • experience of supervising/mentoring bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral students.
  • a broad professional background, such as being both qualified and interest in contributing to several of the department’s degree programmes and activities.

Equal weight will be given to pedagogical and research skills.

Terms

This is a permanent full-time position (100%) starting at the earliest convenience.

A probationary period may be required.
