The Department of Environmental and Life Sciences at the Faculty of Health, Science and Technology comprises the subjects Biology and Geomatics. In the Biology subject, a large part of the teaching takes place in the university’s teacher education programmes. The subject is responsible for teaching biology didactics in all teacher education programmes, at all levels. At Karlstad University, teacher education and subject-specific education research have special priority. The subject-specific education research is organised in research centres, SMEER (Science, Mathematics and Engineering Education Research) being the node for research in natural sciences (biology, physics and chemistry), mathematics and engineering education. The research environment consists of researchers in subject-specific education. In addition to research and teaching, the researchers are also engaged in seminar activities in collaboration with different departments, organisations and higher education institutions. Duties include both teaching and research. Teaching includes courses in the teacher education programmes for early years education, primary education and secondary education, as well as a complementary, shorter program in secondary education. Teaching duties also include supervising degree projects. Additional duties consist of conducting research in collaboration with members of the SMEER research group and actively seeking external research funding. Professional development is an integrated part of the employment, with dedicated time and resources allocated to enhance and update one's skills and expertise in the relevant field

To be eligible for the position of senior lecturer in biology with a specialisation in education, applicants are required to hold a PhD or equivalent academic qualifications, as well as having demonstrated teaching expertise. The PhD must be in biology with a specialisation in education or natural sciences education, or in biology with acquired competence and experience from educational research. Applicants’ undergraduate education must include biology of relevance to the duties included in the position. Applicants can also refer to other professional qualifications deemed relevant to the nature of the position and the duties included therein.
According to Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure, teachers must have the personal qualities required to perform the duties included, as well as completed training in higher education pedagogy. In special circumstances, the course in higher education pedagogy may be completed within two years of employment. As Swedish is the language of instruction in the majority of courses, proficiency in spoken and written Swedish is required. Proficiency in English is also a requirement.
