Karlstad University / Department of Environmental and Life Sciences

The Department of Environmental and Life Sciences at the Faculty of Health, Science and Technology comprises the subjects Biology and Geomatics. In the Biology subject, a large part of the teaching takes place in the university’s teacher education programmes. The subject is responsible for teaching biology didactics in all teacher education programmes, at all levels. At Karlstad University, teacher education and subject-specific education research have special priority. The subject-specific education research is organised in research centres, SMEER (Science, Mathematics and Engineering Education Research) being the node for research in natural sciences (biology, physics and chemistry), mathematics and engineering education. The research environment consists of researchers in subject-specific education. In addition to research and teaching, the researchers are also engaged in seminar activities in collaboration with different departments, organisations and higher education institutions. You can find more information about SMEER on the website: (link to SMEERs website)

Duties include both teaching and research. Teaching includes courses in the teacher education programmes for early years education, primary education and secondary education, as well as a complementary, shorter program in secondary education. Teaching duties also include supervising degree projects. Additional duties consist of conducting research in collaboration with members of the SMEER research group and actively seeking external research funding. Professional development is an integrated part of the employment, with dedicated time and resources allocated to enhance and update one's skills and expertise in the relevant field

To contribute to a positive work environment and further department activities, you are expected to be a present and active part of the day-to-day operations and workplace community.
