Karlstad University / Faculty of Health, Science and Technology / Department of Mathematics and Computer Science

Description

Are you interested in the interplay between mathematical modeling, physical systems, and programming?

The Faculty of Health, Science and Technology is accepting applications for a doctoral studentship leading to a PhD in Mathematics at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.

Modern simulation software can quickly compute important performance measures, such as how much a machine part is deformed when loaded or how well an antenna radiates to the surroundings. Today, computational design algorithms can modify, or even create from scratch, geometries that outperform existing designs. As an aspect of the digitalization of engineering, computational design optimization is in strong development. In this project, we will develop efficient gradient-based design optimization methods based on the numerical solution of partial differential equations. More precisely, this project encompasses the development and analysis of state-of-the-art computational design optimization methods. The proposed studies primarily investigate questions regarding geometric properties, in particular, boundary identification and treatment, of the studied optimization problems. The Swedish Research Council provides funding for this project.

Duties

The doctoral student will study computational design optimization, a field that combines simulations with numerical optimization algorithms for engineering design. The purpose of this project is to develop and analyze efficient algorithms and methods. The project primarily considers applications in acoustic and electromagnetic wave propagation problems.

The doctoral student’s main task is to devote herself/himself to her/his doctoral studies, which includes participation in research projects and doctoral studies. The programme comprises 240 credits for a Degree of Doctor, including the doctoral thesis, and 120 credits for a Degree of Licentiate. The doctoral student is expected to work independently and be prepared to contribute to the activities at the subject and the department, as well as taking on teaching and administration duties. Such duties may not constitute more than 20% of full-time..

To contribute to a positive work environment and the department’s activities, the doctoral student is expected to be a present and active part of the day-to-day operations and workplace community.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for doctoral studies the applicant must meet the general and specific entry requirements (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap 7, Sect. 35).

To meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have been awarded a second-cycle qualification, satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 7, Sect. 39).

To meet the specific entry requirements for doctoral studies in mathematics, the applicant must hold a Degree of Master (60 or 120 credits) with a major in mathematics and a specialisation in a relevant field, hold a degree with an equivalent specialisation in mathematics, or in some other way have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge, in Sweden or abroad.

Admission and assessment criteria

To be eligible for doctoral studies, the applicant must be considered to have the ability required to benefit from the programme (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 7, Sect. 35). Admission is based on individual assessment.

The assessment focuses on the applicant’s performance in previous studies, the quality of independent projects included in these studies, language skills, and whether the applicant intends to be a present and active part of the research environment. Considerable weight will be given to personal qualities such as the ability to cooperate, take responsibility, show sound judgement, dedication, and a positive attitude towards colleagues and students.

The selection is based on previous study results and special weight will be given to the quality of independent projects completed during these studies, and in particular to such projects completed at Master’s level and in the proposed research specialisation. The most important assessment criteria for the selection are scientific skills, suitability for the project, and the documented ability to work both as part of a group and independently.

Terms

Upon admission to doctoral studies, the person will be offered the appointment of doctoral student (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 5, Sect. 3). The position comprises four years of full-time studies, or five years at a study rate of 80% with 20% teaching or other departmental duties. The position is fixed-term — one year initially, followed by possible extensions by a maximum of two years at a time. Start date by agreement.

The salary for the doctoral studentship corresponds to the standard level of salary for doctoral students at Karlstad University.

Application

Submit the application via the university’s web-based recruitment tool, Varbi.

Applicants are responsible for submitting a complete application in accordance with the advertisement, for providing translations of any documents written in a language other than Swedish or English, and for ensuring that the documentation allows for objective and qualitative assessments. A complete application should be submitted by the application deadline. An incomplete application may jeopardise a fair assessment of qualifications.

The application shall include:

- a cover letter briefly describing the reasons behind your interest in the position and your qualifications and experience in relation to the duties included in the position (max. one page),
- a list of qualifications (CV),
- degree certificate with a complete transcript of the courses included, or a certified list of completed courses with grades and dates,
- copy of Master’s thesis or equivalent,
- where applicable, copies of publications or certificates for other qualifications,
- any letters of recommendation,
- two references, such as a teacher, supervisor, or previous or current superior.

Attach all the documents and publications you wish to be considered to the electronic application (do not just provide links). Name each uploaded document to clearly indicate its content.

Documents that cannot be submitted electronically should be sent to the following address:
