The Department of Language, Literature and Intercultural Studies (ISLI) is made up of six sections: English, Spanish, Swedish Language, Swedish as a Second Language, Comparative Literature, and Intercultural Studies. Comparative Literature offers freestanding courses at undergraduate, Master’s and doctoral level, as well as courses included in the teacher education programmes from pre-school to upper-secondary school. The department includes the Research Group for Culture Studies (KuFo) and in matters related to education and language learning, the subject collaborates with the research environments Centre for Language and Literature Education (CSL) and Research on Subject-specific Education (ROSE). Duties comprise teaching courses at undergraduate and Master’s level. Teaching and supervising PhD students may also be included. Emphasis is on teaching within the teacher education programmes and freestanding courses in comparative literature. Additional duties include supervision, assessment, course coordination, and course development, as well as active participation in the further development of education, research, and collaboration with the wider community at subject, department, and faculty level. You are expected to teach both on-campus and distance learning courses. The language of instruction is Swedish.
20 % of the senior lectureship is earmarked for continual professional development. You are expected to pursue external research funding, individually or as part of a team, as well as actively participating in the department’s seminar activities. In order to contribute to a positive work environment and further the activities of the department and the subject, you are also expected to be a present and active part of the day-to-day operations and workplace community.
To be eligible for the position of senior lecturer in comparative literature, applicants are required to hold a PhD in comparative literature. Demonstrated teaching expertise is also required.
The Karlstad University Appointments Procedure stipulates that applicants must have the personal qualities required to perform the duties involved, as well as completed courses in higher education pedagogy. Candidates who have not completed courses in higher education pedagogy may still be hired, provided that they use the time alloted to continual professional development to complete the required courses within two years of employment, or that they apply for validation of prior learning.
Since Swedish is the language of instruction, a high level of proficiency in spoken and written Swedish is required.

A degree in education, experience in teacher education, or other experience within the school system are deemed as valuable qualifications. We also value experience in teaching creative writing and/or publication of fictional work by the candidate.
