Background

We are now accepting applications for a senior lecturer in Chemistry. The position comprises teaching Chemistry, as well as conducting research within Biochemistry/Biotechnology.

Faculty of Health, Science and Technology houses the Department of Engineering and Chemical Sciences, with approximately 60 employees. The department comprises the subjects of Building and Construction Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Energy and Environmental Technology.

The discipline of Chemistry is responsible for courses in engineering programmes, teacher programmes, the preparatory year for technical and science subjects and Drug Analysis - Bachelor Programme in Chemistry. The bachelor programme is designed in consultation with the research conducted in Chemistry. Courses within the programme, as well as most courses in Chemistry, comes in both on-campus variants and as distance learning courses.

Within the discipline of Chemistry, research within Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physical Chemistry and Chemistry Education is conducted. A researcher with expertise in both Biochemistry and Biotechnology can cooperate with different teams.

Chemistry research is well-funded, in recent years through external contributions from the Knowledge Foundation, the Swedish Research Council, the Swedish Energy Agency, the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation and the Swedish National Space Agency.

Your position will be Senior lecturer in Chemistry.

Duties

The main duties are teaching and conducting research, as well as any related administration work.

Teaching comprises planning, performing, examination, evaluation and development of courses. Most of the teaching will be courses in Biochemistry/Biotechnology, but also bachelor-level chemistry courses and courses in related subjects when needed.  Teaching duties also include supervision of project works and degree projects.

Research comprises own research in collaboration with research currently being conducted in the field of Chemistry, or within the disciplines research collaborations, and where expertise in Biochemistry/Biotechnology is relevant. You will also participate in educating researchers, both as a supervisor and through doctoral courses. Contributing to applications for external funding is important for the development of the research in Chemistry at Karlstad University.

Duties also include collaboration, development work and continuing professional development. In order to contribute to a positive working environment and help further the subject’s activities, we expect you to be a present and active part of the day-to-day operations and workplace community.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for the position, applicants are required to have demonstrated teaching skills, hold a PhD in Chemistry, specialising in Biochemistry/Biotechnology, or equal scientific or other professional qualifications deemed relevant to the nature of the position and the duties included therein. 

The position requires a good command of Swedish and English. An applicant who does not meet the requirement of proficiency in Swedish may still be hired provided they are able to actively acquire the language skills.

Pursuant to the Karlstad University Appointments Procedure, teachers must have the personal qualities required to perform the duties involved, as well as a completed course in higher education pedagogy. In special circumstances, the course in higher education pedagogy may be completed within two years of employment.

Assessment criteria  

In the assessment, equal weight will be given to research and teaching expertise.

In the selection of eligible applicants, special weight will be given to:

  • Current, specialised and broad knowledge of scientific research within biochemistry and biotechnology.
  • Scientific production with a specific focus on any of the research areas at Karlstad University, where expertise in Biochemistry/Biotechnology is relevant.
  • Recently documented ability to, in competition with other applicants, secure funding for research.
  • Documented ability of planning, teaching, examining and evaluating higher education courses in Chemistry.
  • Documented experience in teaching higher education courses in Biochemistry/Biotechnology.
  • A documented reflective approach to student learning and your role as a teacher.

  Considerable weight will be given to:

  • Documented experience in supervising doctoral students and contributing to doctoral courses.
  • Documented experience and ability in leading development processes for teaching and examinations in Chemistry or adjacent field, as well as communicating these efforts to colleagues and students.
  • Experience of international projects and national or international networks.

Considerable weight will be given to the ability to cooperate, sound judgement, responsibility, dedication, and a positive attitude towards colleagues and students.

Terms

This is a permanent full-time position starting 1 March 2023, or according to agreement.
