Description

The Faculty of Health, Science and Technology houses the Department of Engineering and Chemical Sciences, which comprises four subjects: building and construction engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering and environmental and energy systems. The department has a staff of around 60 and offers courses for students in four engineering programmes, teacher education, the preparatory year in science and technology and the Bachelor Programme in Chemistry. The study programme Master of Science in Chemical Engineering combines chemistry, technology and mathematics to provide the knowledge needed for designing a process, all the way from molecular level to full-scale production. The final two years of the study programme include courses tied to research in Chemical Engineering, for example related to biomass products, such as paper, biomaterials and bioenergy. The programme prepares the students for working within the transition to a circular and sustainable bioeconomy.

The Department of Engineering and Chemical Sciences is currently expanding both its research and educational activities.  An active collaboration between Computer Science and Chemical Engineering brings the strong research areas DAMI4.0 (Research Center for Digital Adaptive Manufacturing for Industry 4.0) and Pro2BE (Processes and Products for a Circular Bioeconomy) together. We now invite applications for a senior lectureship in Chemical Engineering with research focus on optimised industrial systems and production lines through digitalisation (for example intelligent process control by means of digital twins, machine learning or big data analytics). We welcome applicants with connections to forest-based industries. The aim is to complement and improve existing programmes, courses and research in Computer Science and Chemical Engineering, related to sustainable and circular bioeconomy. At Karlstad University, much of both research and teaching related to forest-based industries is conducted within the academic environment Pro2BE, https://www.kau.se/pro2be, with 40+ researchers and students. More information on DAMI4.0 can be found here: https://www.kau.se/dami.

The position is a senior lectureship in Chemical Engineering.

Duties

Duties include both teaching and conducting research. Teaching duties will include teaching both bachelor’s and master’s level courses in Chemical Engineering and related fields. The research will mainly focus on optimisation of industrial systems and production lines through digitalisation. You are expected to participate in the development of externally funded research projects. Collaboration with the wider society, both in relation to research and education, is also an important part of the work.

Duties include planning, teaching and evaluating courses. As a senior lecturer you are also expected to contribute to the development of new courses. Teaching duties also include supervision and examination for courses on bachelor’s, master's and doctoral levels. Higher education pedagogy development is important for increasing the quality of the teaching. At bachelor level, courses in Chemical Engineering are given in Swedish. At master level, the language of instruction can also be English. The position also includes administrative duties.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for the position, applicants are required to have demonstrated teaching expertise and hold a PhD in Chemical Engineering or equivalent area relevant for the position, or equivalent research qualifications or other professional expertise of relevance to the subject content of the appointment and the duties involved.

The position requires a good command of Swedish and English. A candidate who does not meet the language requirement may still be hired provided they actively work to acquire the necessary language proficiency.

A requirement for eligibility is a completed course in higher education pedagogy. An applicant who has not completed a course in higher education pedagogy can in some cases still be eligible for the position provided that they use the time allotted for professional development to complete the course within two years of employment.
