Description

The Department of Engineering and Physics at the Faculty of Health, Science and Technology has an extensive activity in the fields of mechanical and materials engineering, covering both research and teaching. The department offers courses for the faculty’s Master and Bachelor degree programs in materials and mechanical engineering and the Bachelor program in innovation and design engineering. The department also has significant teaching and research activities in materials physics. The department has a strong research activity in materials engineering and additive manufacturing, focused on advanced materials and tool steels, fatigue including ultra-high cycle fatigue, tribology in industrial applications. A large part of the research is done in collaboration with industrial partners. Scientists in materials physics and mechanical and materials engineering together form a large research group in materials science, which is prioritized by the faculty. Presently, the department has about 60 employees.

An appointment as an associate senior lecturer is aiming to attract ambitious and qualified researchers in the field, in the beginning of their careers, and is mainly focused on the acquisition of qualifications.

Duties

The main duties include research in materials engineering with a focus on additive manufacturing of metallic materials, preferably in collaboration with strong scientific areas already existing at the department (microstructure characterization and mechanical properties, tribology and fatigue performance, etc.). The research should aim to strengthen and develop the department’s research areas. An ambition to develop strong network with national and international industry, and conduct own research projects in collaboration with industrial partners is expected.

The duties also include teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Duties in teaching can, for a associate senior lecturer, amount to a maximum of 25 %. The teaching is primarily in the materials engineering discipline. Teaching in selected fields of mechanical engineering may be required. Duties also include administrative tasks and assignments within the university. You are also expected to contribute to the department’s development.

It is naturally expected to actively participate in the day-to-day activities and the workplace community to promote a positive work environment and operational development.

During the period of employment, an associate senior lecturer is supposed to develop their autonomy as a researcher and acquire further qualifications in terms of both research and teaching skills to meet the criteria for a position as a senior lecturer.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for the position of associate senior lecturer, applicants are required to have a PhD in materials engineering, mechanical engineering or materials science or equivalent scientific research qualifications, carried out with focus on additive manufacturing and characterization of metallic materials. The position is primarily intended for applicants who have completed their PhD no longer than five years before the application deadline, or who have acquired the corresponding competence in that time. If an applicant completed the PhD or corresponding competence more than five years ago, this requirement may be waived if there are special circumstances.

A further requirement is completed course in higher education pedagogy. In special circumstances, this course may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment.

Excellent skills in English, oral and written, are required. The position also requires proficiency in Swedish. A candidate who does not meet this requirement may still be hired provided he/she is able to actively acquire language skills in Swedish.

Assessment criteria

Priority is given according to the range and depth of an applicant’s academic competence, the scope of the research, and quality of the academic output, and the ability and desire to follow an academic career and potential to contribute to the future development of both research and education.

Special weight is given to:

  • Experience in additive manufacturing of metals using the laser powder bed fusion method, operator skills in printing, and microstructural characterization and mechanical testing of additively manufactured materials.
  • Documented teaching and pedagogical skills in education at undergraduate and/or graduate levels, documented skills in the planning, execution, and evaluation of courses at undergraduate and/or graduate levels.
  • High quality academic output, publications in high-quality international peer-reviewed journals, experience in participation at conferences and symposia.
  • The applicant’s ability to add new competence and experience to the research group in additive manufacturing and the materials engineering research community.

Considerable weight is given to:

  • Experience of advanced scanning and transmission electron microscopy, knowledge in FEM and material mechanics in relation to additive manufacturing, numerical simulation of additive manufacturing process, tribology and biomedical applications of additively manufactured materials.
  • Documented ability to successfully apply for, and attract external research funding, experience of research projects in cooperation between academy and industry.
  • Personal qualities such as the ability to cooperate, taking initiatives, result-oriented, responsibility, dedication, and a positive attitude towards colleagues and students.

Weight is given to

  • Experience of positions of trust within the academy.
  • Up-to-date experience with community collaboration and research and development communication
  • A wide network and international experience within the area of the position.
  • Ability to teach in the Swedish language.

Further information on all eligibility requirements and assessment criteria are provided in the Higher Education Ordinance, Ch. 4, Section 12 and Karlstad University’s appointment regulations.

Terms

The position is a full-time, fixed term employment for 4 years, with preliminary starting date 1st of September 2022 or by agreement.

Terms for promotion to Senior Lecturer

Upon applying, an associate senior lecturer should be promoted to Senior Lecturer provided he or she is qualified for the position (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 4, Sect. 4) and is deemed suitable following an assessment (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 4, Sect. 4a). The applicant must have completed a prerequisite course in higher education pedagogy.

For eligibility requirements and assessment criteria, refer to the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4, and Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure.

The appointment as a Senior Lecturer will be a non-fixed term employment.
