Description

We are looking for a senior lecturer in Gender Studies, a subject with 10 employees at the Department of Social and Psychological Studies, within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The Department also includes Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology. There is a close connection at Karlstad University between the Gender Studies subject and the Centre for Gender Studies (CGF), a transdisciplinary research centre. The primary purpose of CGF is to apply and develop transdisciplinary approaches to sex and gender. Research at CGF focuses on four fields: Gender, Health and Technology, Masculinity Studies, Transgender Studies as well as Gender Equality and Organizational Change. Common to all the fields is disciplinary breadth and the combination of theoretical and applied research. The subject gender studies offers undergraduate and master-level courses as well as international PhD-courses. Both on-campus and distance courses are offered, and Swedish and English are the languages of instruction.

Duties 

The primary duty is teaching in Gender Studies, and it is important that the successful applicant is able to teach from the start of employment. Teaching on varying aspects of gender studies may be required. The work primarily consists of teaching freestanding courses and supervision, but teaching in contract education or adjacent disciplines at the University, such as Sociology, may be expected. The department offers transdisciplinary courses that may also require teaching by the successful candidate.

Classes are taught in Swedish or English. Tasks included in the position are teaching, supervision, examinations, course coordination, and course development, as is active participation in developing the subject and Department with regard to teaching, research, and community collaboration. Time is allotted for professional development. The position is based in Karlstad.

Qualification requirements 

To be eligible for the position, applicants are required to hold a PhD in Gender Studies or equivalent scientific qualifications and have documented pedagogical skills. Proficiency in spoken and written English and at least one Scandinavian language is required.

Pursuant to the Karlstad University Appointments Procedure, teachers must have the personal qualities required to perform the duties involved, as well as a completed course in higher education teaching. If not completed at the start of the employment, the course in higher education teaching may be completed within two years. A complete list of eligibility requirements is available in the Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure and the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4.

Assessment criteria 

Special weight will be given to the applicants’ experiences in teaching Gender Studies at a university college/university, and teaching experience from a higher education institution in one of the Nordic countries is a valuable qualification. We also consider experience in teaching Sociology at a university college/university a valuable qualification.

In the assessment of scientific and pedagogical skills, special weight will be given to pedagogical skills. Pedagogical ability will be assessed based on the ability to plan, conduct, and evaluate teaching as well as supervision and examination ability. Weight will be given to documented experience and ability in terms of leading and communicating the development of teaching and examination with colleagues and students. The same is true of a reflective approach to how student learning and the role as a teacher. Scientific skill will be assessed based on scientific quality and the scope of the research in terms of depth and range within the Gender Studies discipline. Having procured external funding is a valuable qualification.

Considerable weight will be given to personal qualities such as being willing to take initiatives and the ability to build good relations with colleagues and students, contributing to a positive working environment. Considerable weight will also be given to the employee’s sense of responsibility for their duties and ability to work independently. The ability to work with the larger community is also be of importance in this position.

Terms 

This is a permanent full-time position (100%) starting at the earliest convenience. A probationary period may be required.
