Description
The Department of Health Sciences includes the subjects Oral Health, Nursing, Public Health Science and Medical Science. The department has an important role in the education of students within the Nursing Programme, the programmes in Specialist Nursing and the Master’s Programme in Health Science, as well as offering freestanding courses in nursing, public health science and medical science. As of the autumn term 2020, the new three-year Dental Hygienist Programme opens with the aim of becoming one of the best study programmes in the country and thereby contribute to the competence maintenance of dental hygienist in Sweden. It is a modified campus programme where digital distance learning is combined with examinations and clinical training on campus, as well as placements in different parts of the country. Together with the department’s health science subjects, we promote joint development of research and education within the field of health. You will find more information about the new dental hygienist programme on our website.

For doctoral students within the field, the faculty offers a research education environment, the Graduate School of Health. The department has close and fruitful co-operation with Region Värmland. In collaboration with Folktandvården Region Värmland, we will within the near future set up Sweden’s fist academic public dental service clinic (AFK) in Karlstad. AFK is located in immediate proximity to the university and creates great opportunities for development and collaboration within education and research.

Research in the subject aims to apply a salutogenic perspective, which means that it is characterised by the importance of health factors for oral health within different social groups and during the entire life cycle. The profile field of oral health is based on a public health perspective and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration at both local, national and international level. We offer a unique opportunity to be a part of a research group with great visions for the future of research that is represented by highly topical areas within oral health, such as epidemiology, public health and paediatric dentistry and gerodontics. You will find more information about our research on our website.

Duties
As a new employee at the subject Oral Health, you are offered the opportunity to contribute towards, and create, the dental hygienist programme of today and the future. Duties include primarily teaching-related tasks and research.

Teaching-related tasks include development and planning of courses, teaching and examinations within the Dental Hygienist Programme and, where applicable, freestanding courses and contract education. Theoretical teaching takes place mainly via distance learning and clinical teaching/supervision on campus. You may be required to participate in third-cycle courses in health sciences. These are held mainly in collaboration with the Graduation School of Health. Duties also include following the development within oral health and the social development at large that has relevance for the subject and teaching.

As a senior lecturer, you are expected to initiate and conduct research that develops and strengthens the research profile of the department and the subject in collaboration with other researchers and the surrounding community, nationally as well as internationally. It is therefore important that the person who will hold the position actively participates in the research development and applies for external funding together with other researchers. Within the framework of the senior lectureship, there will be resources and room for professional development/research. There will also be opportunities to supervise doctoral students.

Other administrative tasks at the department may be included in the duties, for example, participation in work teams, committees and councils, as well as specific areas of responsibility.

Qualification requirements
Applicants are eligible for the position as senior lecturer at the department who have obtained their Degree of Doctor in Oral Health or in a subject with relevance for the content of the position, as well as a Higher Education Diploma in Dental Hygiene with legitimation. It is also required that the applicant can show a high level of teaching expertise and has a completed course in higher education pedagogy or equivalent qualifications. In special circumstances, the course in higher education pedagogy may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment. The position requires a high level of proficiency in Swedish and English. If the applicant lacks the required proficiency in English, employment may still take place under the condition that the applicant actively commits to acquiring the required language skills. Teaching at first-cycle level will be held in Swedish and therefore a high level of proficiency in Swedish is part of the qualification requirements.

More information on qualification requirements can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance and Karlstad University’s appointments procedure.
