Description

The Civics subject at Karlstad University offers extensive education at the first- and second-cycle levels. The subject is a part of all Primary and Secondary Education programmes. Research linked to Civics concerns subject-specific education and is conducted in collaboration with the third-cycle subjects Political Science, Sociology, Political Economy, and Educational Work. The subject which is currently expanding will recruit new teaching and research staff, and advertises a senior lecturer in Civics.

Duties

Duties include teaching at the first- and second-cycle levels in both programme courses and free-standing courses for teacher students. In addition to teaching, the position involves supervision, examination, course coordination, and course development. Research and participation in third-cycle education will possibly also be part of the lectureship. Active participation in the development work of the Civics subject regarding teaching, research, and third stream activities is included.
The research component involves development of educational Civics research in CSD (the Center for Social Science Didactics).
The position requires active participation in the day-to-day operations of the subject.

Applicants are required to have documented pedagogical skills and a completed course in higher education pedagogy. In special circumstances, the course in higher education pedagogy may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment.

Assessment criteria

Special weight will be given to experience of teaching and research relevant for the field of subject-specific Civics teaching, especially with a focus on theoretical and practical perspectives on professional Civics activities.

Special weight will be given to a high level of oral and written proficiency in Swedish or another Scandinavian language.

Considerable weight is given to experience of teaching in school, the applicant’s own degree in Education, and the qualifications required to teach content related to the core education subjects in the teacher education programme.

Weight is given to personal qualities such as collaborative skills, initiative, and the ability to initiate and complete projects in education and research.  Weight is also given to a good level of oral and written proficiency in English.

Karlstad University aims for diversity in all areas.
