Background

The subject Comparative Literature offers education including free-standing courses and teacher education from preschool to upper secondary level. Free-standing courses are offered at the first-cycle, second-cycle, and third-cycle levels. In terms of research, the Department of Language, Literature and Intercultural Studies includes many members of staff active in two of the strong research groups at Karlstad University, the Research Group for Culture Studies (KuFo) and Research on Subject-specific Education (ROSE), as well as the Centre for Language and Literature Education (CSL).

Duties

Duties include managing research activities in the subject, conducting research, and teaching courses in Comparative Literature and courses included in teacher education.

An important task is to develop the subject further into an environment which encompasses both literary studies and literature education, and to enhance collaboration with other disciplines, especially those involved in KuFo and CSL/ROSE.

Administrative and managerial tasks are included, as well as contacts with society at large, especially in relation to school.

Qualification requirements

To be qualified for employment as a professor of Comparative Literature, the applicant must have a Degree of Doctor in Comparative Literature and demonstrate sufficient research and teaching expertise in the discipline. Teaching expertise must be well documented in a way that allows for qualitative assessment. Completed courses in higher education pedagogy and research supervision are required, or equivalent knowledge acquired otherwise. Being present at work and in the day-to-day activities of the subject is required.

Assessment criteria

Research expertise and pedagogical competence are equally important for assessment.

When selecting among qualified applicants, special weight will be given to:

  • The scope and complexity of their research
  • Their ability to manage, lead, and administer research activities
  • Their ability to manage and lead collaborative projects on education and other subject-related areas of work
  • Experience of supervision at the third-cycle level
  • Experience of teaching at different levels

Considerable weight will be given to:

  • Experience of research relevant for literature education, or other experience that can enrich the development of literature education in the subject
  • Personal traits such as teamwork skills, creativity, and initiative
  • Well developed research networks

Terms of employment

The appointment is for full-time, non-fixed term employment. Starting date by agreement.
