Background

A PhD position in computer science, focused on programmable networking, is available within the Distributed Systems and Communications (DISCO) Group at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Karlstad University. Research within DISCO is focused on computer networking, cloud computing and next-generation technologies such as programmable networking, SDN/NFV and 5G. The position is part of a collaboration with Red Hat Research. Red Hat contributes to many applied research projects relevant in the open source world, including high-performance programmable networking solutions using e.g., eXpress Data Path (XDP) and eBPF.

Duties

The PhD position is focused on programmable networking solutions and how to define, design and implement them. The work consists of developing and evaluating new architectures and mechanisms to provide coherent and comprehensive support for programmable networking in Linux. To accomplish this, in-kernel technologies such as XDP and eBPF will be used.

The candidate is expected to carry out research in this area by combining implementation work with practical experiments, simulations and/or emulation of networks and protocols. Knowledge and/or experience within one or more of the areas of communication protocols, kernel programming, practical work with Linux/Unix, network simulation/emulation, and data analysis are therefore desirable. It is required that the candidate has very good programming skills, as well as proficiency of the English language (written and spoken).

The candidate is expected to work independently, as well as in teams, enthusiastically advancing the technology frontline. A majority of the work will be done in cooperation with other scientists and engineers from Red Hat, and it is therefore desirable that the candidate is able to perform well in collaborative work and has experience of working in projects.

Per agreement between Karlstad University and Red Hat research, all intellectual property resulting from the research should be dedicated to the public. Furthermore, developed software should be offered through an open source license and research results submitted for publication in openly available literature.

Eligibility

Eligible for this position are candidates that meet the general admission requirements as well as the specific admission requirements and be judged to have the ability otherwise required to pursue the programme successfully.

A person who has earned a master’s degree of at least 240 ECTS credits of which at least 60 ECTS credits are earned for studies at master’s level, or who in some other way in the country or abroad has acquired largely equivalent knowledge, has general eligibility for admission.

A person with a Master’s degree (60 credits) in computer science, a Master’s degree (120 credits) in computer science or a Master of Science degree in computer technology has special eligibility for admission to doctoral studies in computer science. A person who in some other way in the country or abroad has acquired equivalent qualifications also has special eligibility.

Admission and assessment criteria

For admission to doctoral studies an applicant must be judged to have the ability required to pursue the programme successfully (Higher Education Ordinance, Ch. 7, sect. 35). Admission is based on individual assessment of the candidates’ abilities to successfully pass the research education.

Considerable weight is given to personal qualities such as ability to cooperate, to exercise good judgement, to take responsibility, to commit to activities, and to have a positive attitude to colleagues and students.

Terms of Employment

Upon admission to doctoral studies, a studentship position will be offered (Higher Education Ordinance, Ch. 5, sect.3). The position is a full-time, fixed-term employment (one year that can be extended by two years at the most at a time) with starting-date by agreement.

Applicants are responsible for submitting a complete application in accordance with the advertisement before deadline and for ensuring that the documentation allows for objective and qualitative assessments. An incomplete application may jeopardise a fair assessment of qualifications. Give two references, of which at least one is a former or present supervisor, or equivalent.

Application should include

  • Letter of application with description of your background and your interest in the position,
  • List of qualifications (CV),
  • Degree certificate with transcripts of courses completed, or a certified list of completed courses with grades and dates,
  • Copy of a Master thesis (one or two years) or equivalent,
  • Copies of publications or certificate of other qualifications, if applicable,
  • Letter of recommendation, if possible.

Submit the application via the University’s web-based recruitment tool, Varbi, and attach all the documents and publications you wish to be considered to the electronic application (do not provide links to them). Name each uploaded document to clearly indicate its content.
