Beskrivning

The English department offers a wide range of courses at all levels of higher education in the areas of teacher education for all school levels, degree courses in English, and English for specific purposes.

Doctoral studies and research are pursued in literature and linguistics, frequently in association with the strong research group KuFo (Culture Studies Research Group) and the Centre for Language and Literature Education, which is part the strong research group ROSE (Research on Subject-specific Education).

Background

The Research Group for Culture Studies (KuFo) at Karlstad University is an interdisciplinary platform for researchers active in the culturally focused humanities. At present, the group includes researchers representing English literature and linguistics, comparative literature, intercultural studies, cultural studies, working life studies, as well as art history and visual studies, but is also open for researchers in any field focusing on cultural issues. The group is held together by a common interest in what is termed ‘the cultural archive of society’, which involves a focus on issues concerning the historical and geographical dissemination and preservation of cultural discourses. KuFo addresses the cultural archive via three overarching approaches: aesthetics, rhetoric and practice. Without compromising either disciplinary diversity or specialisation, KuFo has developed into a  productive platform for academic studies of culture at Karlstad University (see https://www.kau.se/kufo).

Duties

Duties primarily include applied linguistics research. Teaching and other departmental tasks can be required for up to 20 % of full-time employment.

We are seeking an associate senior lecturer for research within two ongoing projects in the English department and the culture studies research group (KuFo). Both projects involve discourse analysis of socially mediated contexts. One project explores the reception of public apologies in connection with the #MeToo campaign and the successful candidate is expected to assume the role of project leader. The second project  deals with the concepts of ”race” and ”racism” in mediated public communication.

The workplace is Karlstad University. The associate senior lecturer is expected to be present at work and participate actively in departmental operations.

Qualification requirements

Applicants who have a doctorate in English linguistics or equivalent qualifications are eligible for this position. The Doctor’s degree may not be older than five years at the application deadline. Applicants holding older degrees may be considered in special circumstances, which may be leave of absence because of illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances.

Assessment criteria

As the position involves ongoing research projects in English and the culture studies research group (KuFo) with focus on discourse analysis and applied linguistics, considerable weight is given to experience in these areas. Special weight is given to research expertise in discourse analysis, particularly  regarding mediated contexts. In the ranking, priority is given to the highest degree of broad, deep and current expertise in these or related areas.

Special weight is given to excellent command of Swedish and English as this is required for research as well as any teaching duties.

Special weight is also given to experience of working in externally financed research projects and to demonstrated ability to be granted external research funding.

Considerable weight is given to documented active participation in research conferences and publication in peer-reviewed journals of relevance to research in applied linguistics, interaction or discourse studies.

Considerable weight is also given to demonstrated ability to cooperate with researchers in multi-disciplinary research environments.

Weight is given to demonstrated ability and ambition to make an academic career and potential to contribute to future developments in research and education.

Weight is given to demonstrated  teaching experience. Applicants should have completed a course in higher education pedagogy or, if employed, should do so immediately.

Terms of employment

The position is fixed-term employment limited to a maximum of four years full-time. Starting date: 1 April 2020.

Terms of promotion to senior lecturer

Employment as associate senior lecturer is a qualifying position, which may lead to appointment as senior lecturer if all qualification requirements are met. An associate senior lecturer employed at an institution of higher education shall, on application, be promoted to senior lecturer if he or she is eligible for the position of senior lecturer and is deemed to be suitable for such employment, according to the assessment criteria stipulated to apply in a case for promotion to senior lecturer at the HE institution in question. Promotion on such grounds leads to permanent employment as senior lecturer.

Eligibility for appointment as senior lecturer requires a doctorate in English linguistics or relevant area for the present recruitment profile, completed course in higher education pedagogy or corresponding qualifications demonstrated in other ways, and demonstrated teaching expertise.

A further requirement for promotion is that the associate senior lecturer has, independently and in considerable scope and quality, contributed to research at the university during the period as associate senior lecturer.
