Description
Research in political science at Karlstad University is currently pursued mainly in three areas: public sector governance, critical policy studies with a focus on gender mainstreaming and the environment, and European studies.  In addition, new recruitments are developing research in international relations with a focus on the Middle East and election studies. On a general level, there is a great interest in traditional research issues in political science regarding theory of democracy and political theory in the department. Our research is also linked to a broader environment at the university, mainly through collaboration with Centre for Climate and Safety (CCS) and Centre for Social Science Education CSD). Political Science is part of the Department of Political, Historical, Religious and Cultural Studies, and Cooperation between disciplines is ongoing in study programmes and research.

We offer courses and programmes at all university levels. At undergraduate level we offer a Bachelor programme, and a wide range of courses in political science, European studies and public health administration. We also participate in courses for the spatial and social planning programme and teacher education programmes, and offer a Master’s programme in political science in a new format which started in autumn 2019.  At doctoral level we offer courses in theory and methodology and develop new courses in the areas central to research areas.

External contacts and collaboration are important to us besides research and teaching. This is manifested in our frequent media appearance as commentators and experts.

Duties
The position includes the three standard duties of a senior lectureship: first, teaching and supervising at undergraduate, master and doctoral levels, usually also including programme or course convening; second, participating in developing teaching and research in the subject; and third, pursuing research while actively applying for external research funding, keeping up with developments in the research area and publishing in international journals.

Assessment criteria

Considerable weight is given to ongoing research and ability to initiate and conduct research independently.

Considerable weight  is given to personal qualities such as ability to cooperate, to take initiatives and to create good relationships with students and colleagues.

Research in terms of international publications and success in competing for external funding is a valuable qualification, as is administrative experience.

We expect attendance at work on a daily basis and participation in joint departmental tasks and activities.

The applicant who, after a qualitative assessment, is considered to have the best qualifications for the duties of the position and best able to contribute to a positive development of the subject political science will be offered the position.
