The sociology section offers courses in sociology and sociological social psychology at undergraduate, master, and doctoral levels as well as the social science degree programme Social Analysis, to around 450 students. A staff of around 20 are involved in research, teaching and external contacts and participate in several research projects and in national and international cooperation.
Currently, research in sociology at Karlstad University is primarily pursued in three main areas: daily and personal life, critical age studies, and resistance studies, often from an intersectionality perspective. We are open to broadening and developing our research areas.
Sociology is part of a multidisciplinary department, also including social work, psychology and gender studies.
We are seeking a professor with experience of building inclusive research environments, who has a broad research record and who can play an important role in academic cooperation and in developing sociology. Duties include research and teaching at undergraduate, master, and doctoral levels. A professor has the responsibility for leading and developing research and for supervising doctoral students in the discipline. Duties also involve actively applying for external funding of projects that can include research staff in sociology, as well as developing external contacts and cooperation with other academic institutions in Sweden and abroad. Managerial duties may also be required.

Special weight is given to demonstrated cooperation skills, pronounced academic leadership qualities and excellent ability to contribute to a sound research environment.
Special weight is given to documented ability to build research environments, for example by including junior researchers in research projects, or by attracting research funding for doctoral students.
Special weight is given to research expertise in the current research areas at Karlstad University mentioned above.
Considerable weight is given to administrative skills, as well as to good language and communicative skills in Swedish and English. If one of these language skills is missing, an applicant can still be employed on condition that such skills are developed within two years of employment.
Weight is given to cooperation with national and international research environments.
In the assessment, equal attention is given to teaching expertise and research expertise.
The appointment is non-fixed term full-time with starting date at the earliest convenience.
We expect the appointee to be present at the university on a daily basis.
