Description

Human geography forms part of the Department of Geography, Media and Communication at Karlstad University. Human geography focuses on the interaction between humans, society and the environment, locally, regionally and globally.

Human geography is offered as part of different study programmes and courses up to doctoral level at Karlstad University. The subject is responsible for or included in the spatial and social planning programme, the tourism programme, different teacher training programmes, the one- and two-year master programmes in region building, as well as the master programme in geomedia studies.

At Karlstad University, research in human geography has been conducted for around 35 years. Research areas include local and regional development, place creation, mobility, tourism, leisure, culture, landscape issues, geography and media, as well as issues related to the natural and cultural environment. Research in human geography is conducted in two of the university’s designated strong research groups, Geomedia and Research on Subject-Specific Education (includes the Centre for Social Science Education (CSD)), as well as at the Centre for Regional Studies (CRS).

Karlstad University has a long tradition of successful cooperation with the community in human geography, not least through our participation in the above-mentioned centres.
