Description
Karlstad University has an extensive course offering in Swedish at bachelor and master levels, including subject courses focused on linguistics, and we envision further expansion of our subject course offering. Swedish is also an integral part of teacher training programmes, from preschool to upper-secondary school. In the area of subject-specific education we collaborate with the Centre for Language and Literature Education (CSL), which aims to initiate and develop practice-based research and development projects. The Research Group on Subject-Specific Education (ROSE) was designated a strong research environment by Karlstad University in 2017. We are now seeking a senior lecturer in Swedish to strengthen our linguistics teaching, particularly on the teacher training programmes.

Duties
Duties mainly involve teaching Swedish linguistics at bachelor and master levels. Most teaching is conducted as part of the teacher training programmes. Additional duties include supervision, examination, course coordination and course development, as well as active participation in developing the teaching, research and community cooperation activities of the subject, department and faculty. The successful applicant is expected to teach both campus and distance education courses and to participate actively in the daily activities of the department. The position includes a 20% professional development component which should primarily be dedicated to research.

Qualification requirements
The eligibility requirement for appointment as senior lecturer in Swedish is a doctorate in Swedish Linguistics, Swedish-Specific Education, or Nordic Languages, and documented teaching expertise. A completed course in higher education pedagogy, or an equivalent qualification, is required for appointment as senior lecturer. Under special circumstances, this course may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment.

Assessment criteria
Weight is given to higher education teaching experience, experience of teaching both campus and distance education courses, and ideally courses that form part of teacher training programmes. Weight is given to a teaching degree and teaching experience in schools. Weight is further given to certain types of professional language and text-related work experience obtained beyond the education sector.

Considerable weight is given to the ability to build good relations with colleagues and students, take initiative and demonstrate commitment to the development of Swedish as a subject. This requires active participation in the daily activities of the department in Karlstad.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, non-fixed-term position with starting date at the earliest convenience or as per agreement. A probationary period may be required.

The application should include:

  • application letter
  • documented CV with the contact details of at least two references
  • brief account of research expertise
