Description
The Faculty of Health Science and Technology has an opening for one full-time post-doctoral researcher at the Department of Engineering and Physics in the novel field of additive manufacturing. The post-doc is dedicated to studies in advanced alloys manufactured by selective laser melting (SLM). Areas of research addressed to manufacturing, material printability, manufacturability issues, problems of microstructure of as-built material and characterization of properties and performance of the final material.

The research project is a part of “AT-LAB – regional additive laboratory at Karlstad University” project co-funded by the European Union via Regional Development Fund, Region Värmland and Karlstad University. The research project is part of the research group Characterization and Modeling of Materials, (CMM) at Karlstad University. This post-doctoral position is part of the strategy to develop the group, focusing on one of the core interests of the research group, and includes collaboration with group members.

Duties
Additive manufacturing is a new technology providing unique opportunities to design and sustainable manufacturing of components. Performance of the final product, nevertheless, is under consideration, as properties and performance of additive manufactured materials is not well established. This position implies manufacturing, characterization and testing of advanced materials manufactured by SLM to establish microstructure-properties relationships.

The postdoc researcher will work independently in the preparation laboratory, utilize scanning and transmission electron microscopy facilities, conduct mechanical tests (tensile, bending, fatigue), to contribute in knowledge dissemination, conferences, publish scientific articles. Contribution in installation of SLM equipment is also a task for the advertised position.

Qualification Requirements
To be eligible for the position, applicants are required to hold a PhD or equivalent in materials science and engineering. The candidate must have completed the degree no more than three years before the last date for applications unless special grounds exist. The position includes publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international conferences, therefore perfect skills in scientific writing and presentations in English are obligatory.

Assessment grounds
We are searching for a highly motivated candidate with experience in the fields of additive manufacturing, advanced characterization methods, and mechanical testing. Karlstad University values personal qualities such as the ability to cooperate and establish good relations with colleagues, as well as the ability to work independently and to take initiatives. Relevance and quality of the applicant’s PhD thesis and other scientific merits and, well-documented knowledge and skills will be used for assessment. Candidates are assessed individually, based on their merits and relevance to the described tasks. Previous knowledge and skills in additive manufacturing and, scanning and transmission electron microscopy are advantageous.

Terms
The position is a full time position for 24 months. The starting date for the position is September 1, 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Application
Application should include:

  • Personal letter, describing yourself and stating the reasons for your application
