Description

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Karlstad University, Sweden, has an opening for a full time permanent position as Senior Lecturer in Applied Mathematics.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science consists of the two research subjects, Mathematics and Computer Science, and has a research and teaching staff of more than 70 persons. Two directions stand out in Karlstad mathematics: Applied Analysis and Mathematics Education. The Applied Analysis research is driven by problem settings inspired by real world applications and is focusing on multiscale modeling, analysis and simulation methods for partial differential equations (PDEs), kinetic theory, functional analysis, interacting particle systems, error correcting codes, and information theory.
Concerning teaching the subject of mathematics/mathematics education are responsible for a large number of courses in engineering programs and teacher education programs.

We are looking for a strongly motivated person who has growth potential and a strong research record related to the areas mentioned above, preferably connected to PDEs. The announced position is intended to complement and strengthen current research and education in Applied Analysis/Applied Mathematics.

Duties

The candidate is expected to contribute actively to the development of the Applied Analysis group by carrying out high-quality research fitting the aforementioned research directions. He/she is expected to be proactive in strengthening and maintaining the own professional network and in identifying sources for external funding through applications for grants at the national and international level. Moreover, the candidate is expected to act as an independent player in a team, for instance, also by promoting interactions and collaborations with other departments of the university and the local community. The duties also include teaching in mathematics, supervision of BSc, MSc and PhD students and research administration. Most of the teaching load is concerned with undergraduate studies in engineering and teacher education, involving also course development and coordination.

Requirements

To be eligible for the position, applicants are required to hold a PhD in Mathematics with a specialization in partial differential equations (e.g. numerics and/or analysis for PDEs, inverse problems, mathematical aspects of materials science, interacting particles and discrete-to-continuum limits) or related areas, or have corresponding qualifications. Strong motivation and ability to work independently as well as to collaborate with other researchers are important characteristics. Very good oral and written communication skills in English are required.

The ability to teach mathematics subjects at both undergraduate and graduate levels is also required. Completed course in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education or equivalent qualifications is a requirement. In special circumstances, this course may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment. The successful candidate is expected to teach and supervise in Swedish within two years.

Assessment grounds

In the assessment procedure, equal emphasis will be placed on research and teaching skills. Special attention is given to well-documented pedagogical experience and skills, documentation of research skills relevant for the subject area of the position, and demonstration of good collaborative abilities. Further emphasis will be put on the candidate’s experience of applying for funding and to conduct national and international research projects in collaboration with other partners. Karlstad University values personal qualities such as the ability to cooperate and establish good relations with colleagues and students as well as the ability to work independently and to take initiatives.
