Background
The Faculty of Health Science and Technology has an opening for one full-time post-doctoral research position at the Department of Engineering and Physics in the field of additive manufacturing (AM) of tool steels for hot work application. This appointment is dedicated to studies in advanced steel alloys manufactured by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). Areas of research that will be addressed aredevelopment of AM processing parameters, material printability, control of microstructure of as-built material and characterization of properties and testing of performance of the final AM produced steel.

As a post-doctoral researcher you will be involved in the research project “AMHiPP – advanced materials for high performance products” , and co-funded by the Swedish Knowledge Foundation, the industrial partners (Curtis WrightSurface Technologies AB, FBT Bredaryd AB, Gestamp HardTech AB, GKN Aerospace AB, Sandvik Powder Solutions AB, SECO Tools AB, Uddeholms AB and Voestalpine Precision Strip AB) and Karlstad University. In the project, advanced high performance steels are manufactured by powder metallurgy, electro-slag remelting, additive manufacturing methods and characterized. The announced position is a part of the strategy to develop the materials science research group, focusing on one of its core interests, and includes collaboration with its group members and external partners.

Duties
Additive manufacturing is a new technology providing unique opportunities to design and manufacture tools for hot- and cold-work applications. This position implies manufacturing by powder bed fusion, characterization and testing of advanced materials to establish microstructure-properties relationships. Characterization of fatigue and mechanical properties, microstructure and defect distribution are investigated in dependence on manufacturing route and post heat treatment.

You will have the opportunity to work with the manufacturing and preparation laboratory, utilize scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) facilities, conduct mechanical tests, carry out tribological investigations including hot wear tests and to contribute in knowledge dissemination, conferences and to publish scientific articles. The project organization expects close collaboration of the post-doctoral researcher with other members of the project group.

Up to 20% working time can be used for teaching tasks upon an agreement with the project leader and the Head of the Department.

Qualification requirements
Eligible for the position are those applicants who have obtained their PhD in materials engineering or achieved equivalent qualifications abroad, at the most three years prior to the end of the application period. If there are special reasons, the required qualifications may have been obtained earlier.

The position includes publication of results in peer-reviewed international journals and presented at international conferences. Therefore, excellent skills in scientific writing and presentations in English are obligatory.

Assessment criteria
We are searching for a highly motivated candidate with experience in the fields of additive manufacturing, advanced materials characterization methods, and mechanical testing. Previous knowledge and skills in development of process parameters, and in advanced characterization of advanced metallic materials by SEM, XRD, TEM, are advantageous.

Karlstad University values personal qualities such as the ability to cooperate and establish good relations with colleagues, as well as the ability to work independently and to take initiatives.

Karlstad University strives for equal distribution of gender. Since women are under-represented, we would like to see female applicants. In case of equal qualifications, priority can be given to the underrepresented sex.

Terms
The position is a fixed-term, full time position for 24 months. The starting date is as soon as possible.
