Description

The Faculty of Health Science and Technology has an opening for a full-time post-doctoral research fellow at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science in the field of computer networking with focus on Next Generation Datacenters. The position is a full-time position for one year and can be extended for another year based on a mutual agreement. The starting date for the position is by mutual agreement within the time span April 1, 2017 and August 1, 2017.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science consists of the two research subjects: Mathematics and Computer Science. It has a research and teaching staff of more than 60 persons. In Computer Science, research and education are focused on computer networking and distributed systems, computer security and privacy, and software engineering, and are conducted in close cooperation with international, national and regional partners from both academia and industry.

Computer Science is currently in an expansion phase to further strengthen its focus areas and consolidate and develop its international position in research. It has recently been established as an excellent research group at Karlstad University and funding for the expansion is available through the University's strategic efforts to strengthen research. The Knowledge Foundation of Swedish has also granted additional funds to develop a research profile within the Computer Science focus areas in close collaboration with industry.

Duties

The post-doctoral fellow will work in the framework of the research profile HITS funded by the Knowledge Foundation of Sweden. The research profile focuses on the design, implementation and evaluation of novel solutions to support high quality networked services in an increasingly mobile and dynamic world, focusing on Cloud based service delivery. For this post, we are working together with Ericsson AB to design and develop advanced mobile networking and service delivery solutions for the future 5G networks, which will be hosted in Distributed Cloud Environments. Work objectives are mobile networks solutions design and modeling, performance evaluations, research prototype software development, publications. The project is to be conducted within a unique research group with strong track records in transport layer protocols, software defined networking, and wireless networks. English is the working language in the research group.

Requirements

To be eligible for the position, applicants are required to hold a PhD in Computer Science with a specialization in Computer Networking or Cloud Computing or have corresponding qualifications. The candidate must have completed the degree no more than three years before the last date for applications, unless special grounds exist. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required.

Assessment grounds

In the assessment procedure, emphasis will be placed on the applicant's scientific experience in relation to the HITS profile in which the applicant is expected to work. Knowledge or experience in principles and tools for Software Defined Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), ETSI MANO, Cloud/Container Platforms such as OpenStack or Docker are required. Good mathematical skills in the area of optimization are a benefit. Experience in prototyping R&D concepts as well as programming proficiency in Java/Python and familiarity with software development under UNIX-based system (Linux, FreeBSD, etc.) is of benefit. Certification such as CCNA/CCNP in the area of Data Center or Routing is of benefit. Experience from participating in national and international research projects with partners from academia and industry is also an advantage. A strong publication record at top-tier research journals/conferences (e.g., IEEE Transactions) together with strong interpersonal communications skills will be a definitive advantage.

The position includes interaction with other parts of the university as well as with the community and it is therefore important that the candidate has the ability to collaborate with other groups.
