Description
A position as associate senior lecturer in computer networking with a focus on new evolutional transport frameworks for the Internet is available within Computer Science, Karlstad University, Sweden. Computer Science is currently in an expansion phase to further strengthen its focus areas and consolidate and develop its international position in research. It has recently been established as an excellent research group at Karlstad University and funding for the expansion is available through the University's strategic funds. The associate senior lecturer will initially work in the framework of two new exciting and closely related research projects: the upcoming EU Horizon 2020 project NEAT (A New, Evolutive API and Transport-Layer Architecture for the Internet), and the nationally funded research profile HITS (High Quality Networked Services in a Mobile World).

The NEAT project aims to design, develop and validate a novel transport architecture and system that allows services to be dynamically tailored based on application demands, current network conditions, hardware capabilities or local policies and that supports the integration of new functionality in an evolutionary fashion. New avenues for in-network support of application services will be explored based on enhanced signaling between applications and the network. A decoupling of the services offered to applications from the underlying network technologies will allow applications to take advantage of new features as they evolve and promote innovations across the protocol stack.

The HITS profile focuses on the design, implementation and evaluation of novel solutions to support high quality networked services in an increasingly mobile and dynamic world. HITS will conduct research in four main thematic areas that are all connected: developing new mechanisms, protocols and architectural solutions to support scalable signaling in future Mobile Communication Systems, service optimization, trustworthy system operations, and providing support for measurements, emulations and evaluations of proposed solutions in application-relevant scenarios. The position is connected to the work on service optimization and its efforts within more expressive applications and transport services.

Duties
The main duty of the position is research within the field of computer networking with a focus on new evolutional transport frameworks for the Internet. During the first years, the candidate is expected to make significant contributions to the NEAT project and HITS profile by carrying out high-quality research in close collaboration with international and national partners.

The duties also include research administration, teaching in computer networking and related subjects, course administration and development, and supervision of thesis work at graduate and undergraduate levels. The successful candidate is expected to teach and supervise partly in Swedish within a couple of years. Karlstad University will supply adequate training to make this possible.

Requirements
To be eligible for the position, applicants are required to hold a PhD in Computer Science with a specialization in Computer Networking or have corresponding qualifications. The candidate must have completed the degree no more than seven years before the last date for applications, unless special grounds exist.

The ability to teach computer networking at basic and advanced level and software development at basic level is a further requirement. Good oral and written communication skills in English are required.

Assessment grounds
In the assessment procedure emphasis will be placed, first, on research skills and, secondly, on teaching skills. In the assessment of research skills, emphasis will be given to the applicant's scientific experience in relation to the projects in which the applicant is initially expected to work. Knowledge or experience in some of the areas of transport protocols, protocol architectures and programming interfaces, resource allocation, mobile broadband networks or performance modeling and evaluation is therefore desirable.

Strong motivation and the ability to work independently as well as to collaborate with other researchers are important characteristics. Experience from participating in national and international research projects with partners from academia and industry is an advantage.

Additional information
The position constitutes full-time employment limited to four years with starting-date at the earliest convenience. The position can after application, be transformed into a permanent position as senior lecturer. Promotion to senior lecturer requires completed suitable pedagogical training for teaching at university level or equivalent qualifications. Documented pedagogical experience and skills, well documented research skills of relevance for the subject area of the position, and demonstration of good collaborative abilities is further required.

The application is to consist of

  • personal letter describing the applicant and her/his research interests in relation to the announced position
  • a verified CV, preferably including the names of referees
  • a detailed account of your academic and teaching activities
  • an account of your experience from other activities, and experience in management, teamwork and administration
  • list of published works
  • copies of certificates, references and degree certificates
  • copies of the works you wish to cite, a maximum of ten academic publications, and a maximum of five works intended to disseminate expertise, e.g. text books, computer programs for teaching or articles on popular science

Application with reference number REK2014/125 should me made electronically via the University's web-based recruitment tool MyNetwork. Documents that cannot be sent electronically, such as books, publications, software, should be delivered in three copies to:
