We are looking to appoint a Senior Lecturer in Gender Studies with a distinct specialization in Global Studies and/or Human Rights. The subject area of Gender Studies is housed within the Department of Social and Psychological Studies, together with Sociology, Psychology, and Social Work, at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
We offer a dynamic and stimulating working environment, enriched by dedicated students and colleagues from around the world. As part of a university that values close collaboration across disciplinary boundaries, you will have the opportunity to actively shape and strengthen a thriving, international environment for both education and research.
In the autumn semester of 2026, the Division of Gender Studies will launch a new interdisciplinary Bachelor’s programme: Global Perspectives on Gender, Human Rights, and Social Justice. The programme is offered in English on campus in Karlstad and is aimed at both Swedish and international students. It integrates several disciplinary fields while maintaining a strong and distinct gender studies profile.
The division of gender studies has a dedicated and highly skilled team of teachers with broad expertise in gender studies. We are looking for a senior lecturer who can complement our team with expertise in gender studies that is clearly oriented towards global studies and/or human rights, and who can teach, supervise and communicate with students in English.
As the position primarily involves teaching and supervision within the Bachelor’s programme Global Perspectives on Gender, Human Rights, and Social Justice, we particularly welcome applicants with a background in Global Studies and/or Human Rights combined with expertise in Gender Studies

The duties primarily consist of teaching and supervision within the Bachelor’s programme Global Perspectives on Gender, Human Rights, and Social Justice, although teaching in standalone courses and commissioned education may also be included. Teaching is conducted in both Swedish and English. The position encompasses tasks such as teaching, supervision, examinations, course coordination, and course development, as well as active participation in the development of the subject area and the department in relation to education, research, and collaboration with the wider community.
The position requires regular on-site presence and active engagement in daily operations. This is essential both to contribute to a positive work environment and to support the continued development of our education, research, and workplace community.
To be eligible for appointment as Senior Lecturer in Gender Studies, the applicant must demonstrate teaching expertise. Eligibility for the position also requires a PhD in Gender Studies, or equivalent research qualifications in a closely related discipline with a clear gender studies orientation, such as Global Studies, Human Rights, or Law.
According to Karlstad University’s Appointment Regulations, teachers must possess the personal qualities required to fulfil the duties of the position, as well as completed higher education pedagogy training. If such pedagogical training is lacking, appointment may nevertheless be made on the condition that the appointee undertakes to complete the training, which will be scheduled within the scope of the allocated professional development time during the first two years of employment.
Proficiency in Swedish and English is also a requirement. As teaching, assessment and supervision in the bachelor’s programme Global Perspectives on Gender, Human Rights and Social Justice are conducted in English, applicants are required to have a strong command of spoken and written English at the start of the appointment. As certain standalone courses are taught in Swedish and the administrative language at the department is Swedish, applicants are also required to be proficient in Swedish, both in speech and writing.
For all eligibility requirements, please refer to Karlstad University’s Appointment Regulations:
