Description

Karlstad Business School was established in 2009 and comprises the disciplines of Working Life Science, Business Administration, Information Systems, Law, Economics, and Statistics. The school achieved AACSB accreditation in 2021. The mission of Karlstad Business School is “We educate responsible professionals and conduct research with high societal impact”, which permeates all activities of the school. Courses and study programmes at all levels are firmly rooted in research conducted by both individual disciplines and interdisciplinary research groups. Since 2017, we offer a complete law degree (270 credits) featuring specialisations in tax law, business law, criminal/procedural law, and human law. Graduates receive a general qualification for service as law clerks. The discipline also offers a range of courses designed for students enrolled in other degree programmes. Third-cycle law studies specialise in jurisprudence, civil law, finance law, international law, environmental law, public law, procedural law and criminal law.

The discipline currently has a staff of around 25 people, and we need to expand! We are now looking for a senior lecturer in criminal law.

Duties

The position entails teaching within the area of criminal law. Duties also include teaching in other areas of law, such as IT law. Teaching takes place both within the law programme and in other degree programmes. Duties include planning, conducting and evaluating teaching at both bachelor’s and master’s levels, as well as supervising degree projects. We are looking for a senior lecturer who is a skilled teacher and who actively wants to participate in the development of the law programme at both undergraduate and master’s levels. The position requires active participation in securing external research funding and in building and strengthening the discipline’s external connections.

You are expected to collaborate with the wider community for a mutual exchange, as well as work towards ensuring that the knowledge and expertise available at the university is of benefit to society.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for the position of senior lecturer in criminal law, applicants are required have demonstrated teaching expertise. Applicants are also required to hold a PhD or equivalent academic qualifications in criminal law, or equivalent professional qualifications deemed relevant to the nature of the position and the duties included therein.

Since the primary language of instruction is Swedish, excellent oral and written proficiency in Swedish is required. The position also requires a good command of English.

Pursuant to Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure, teachers must have the personal qualities required to perform the duties included, as well as completed training in higher education pedagogy. Candidates who have not completed courses in higher education pedagogy may still be hired, provided that they use the time allotted to continual professional development to complete the required courses within two years of employment, or that they apply for validation of prior learning. Assessment criteria

In the assessment, equal weight will be given to research expertise and teaching expertise.
Special weight will be given to the applicant having strong expertise in both general Swedish criminal law and specialised criminal law. Special weight will also be given to expertise in IT law and legal responsibility in the digital sphere. In the assessment of research expertise, special weight will be given to research related to criminal law, as well as demonstrated expertise that can contribute to furthering the discipline’s research in this area. Special weight will also be given to high potential regarding future academic activities, based on quality rather than quantity.

In the assessment of teaching expertise, special weight will be given to the ability to plan, conduct and evaluate teaching at various education levels, the ability to supervise and assess students, as well as the ability to evaluate how knowledge development and progression for different student groups affect the design of teaching and examination based on student-centred teaching.

Special weight will also be given to personal qualities such as the ability to cooperate and contribute to a positive and well-functioning work environment. The applicant’s ability to show commitment and persistence, work independently and take initiative will also be given special weight.

Considerable weight will be given to the applicant’s documented skills and experience in leading and communicating development work to colleagues and students in relation to teaching and examination in their own subject or subject area.

Valuable qualifications include:

  • Recognised or distinguished teaching skills.
  • Experience in supervising doctoral students.
  • Experience of international employment, projects or national and international networks.
  • Experience in collaborating with the wider community and communicating research findings and results of development work.
  • Participation in research conferences.
  • Ability to successfully secure external funding.
  • Good leadership skills.

Terms

This is a permanent, full-time position. Start date as agreed by both parties. A probationary period may be required.
