Description

We are looking for a Senior Lecturer in Psychology, a subject with a staff of over 40 at the Department of Social and Psychological Studies within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The department also houses Gender Studies, Social Work, and Sociology.

The subject offers courses and study programmes at undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels. In October 2014, the subject was granted the rights to issue the Degree of Master of Science in Psychology, and the Master of Science in Psychology Programme was launched in autumn 2015.

In addition to the five-year psychology programme, the subject offers several freestanding courses in psychology at undergraduate and master’s level. The doctoral programme in psychology at Karlstad University was established in 2006.

Duties

The primary responsibilities involve clinical psychology with an emphasis on cognitive behavioural therapy. However, expertise in other areas, such as developmental psychology, personality psychology and social psychology, also forms an essential foundation for the role. Work mainly consists of teaching and supervising students in the Master of Science in Psychology Programme, but may also include teaching freestanding courses and contract education. Classes may be taught in Swedish and English. Duties such as teaching, supervision, assessment, course coordination and course development are required as part of the position, as is the active participation in developing the discipline and department with regard to teaching, research and community collaboration.

To contribute to a positive work environment and further the department’s activities, we expect you to be a present and active part of the day-to-day operations and workplace community.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for the position of Senior Lecturer in Psychology, applicants are required to have demonstrated teaching expertise. Applicants are also required to hold a Degree of Doctor in Psychology or equivalent academic expertise, or equivalent professional qualifications deemed relevant to the nature of the position and the duties included therein.

Pursuant to Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure, teachers must have the personal qualities required to perform the duties included, as well as have completed training in higher education pedagogy. An applicant who has not completed courses in higher education pedagogy may still be hired if they commit to doing so within two years of employment, using the time earmarked for professional development.

Proficiency in spoken and written Swedish and English is also required since the majority of teaching is held in Swedish and sometimes in English.

For other qualification requirements, refer to Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure.

Assessment criteria

Special weight will be given to the applicant’s clinical work as a psychologist with a specialisation in cognitive behavioural therapy. Professional registration as a psychotherapist with a specialisation in cognitive behavioural therapy is also of special weight. We value specialist qualifications with a focus on treatment.

Completed supervisor course in psychotherapy is also of value, as is previous experience of teaching courses included in a psychology programme.

Considerable weight will be given to personal qualities such as the ability to take initiative and cooperate with others, as well as the ability to build good relationships with colleagues and show a positive attitude towards colleagues and students to contribute to a healthy work environment. Considerable weight will also be given to the employee’s ability to adopt a scientific approach, take responsibility for their duties and work independently. Collaboration with the larger community will also be of importance in the assessment.
