Description

Research in political science primarily revolves around democracy in a broad sense. It specifically addresses issues related to governance of the public sector, spanning from local to international level, where different types of critical perspectives of power are applied. The subject’s current research themes are artificial intelligence, gender equality, climate and environment, risk management, and regional development. Our research is also connected to a wider environment at Karlstad University and we have a close collaboration with the Centre for Societal Risk Research (CSR) and the Centre for Social Science Didactics (CSD). Cross-disciplinary collaboration is part of both education and research.

The subject of Political Science at Karlstad University conducts teaching at all levels, both on campus and online. Teaching at undergraduate level is primarily centred around the Bachelor's Programme in Political Science. At master’s level, we will soon be launching two new programmes: a campus-based master’s programme in political science and, from the autumn semester 2025, an online master’s programme in political science with a focus on psychological defense and disinformation. The subject also has a well-established PhD programme.

Duties

You will be teaching and supervising students at undergraduate, master’s and/or doctoral level[IS1] .  You will be an active part in the development process and teaching of the master’s programme in political science with a focus on psychological defense and disinformation. You will collaborate with colleagues both in the subject and across other disciplines. You may also be required to act as course and programme coordinator. Instruction is primarily in Swedish.

You are expected to participate in the daily operations and take an active role in the subject’s development work related to teaching and research. You are expected to collaborate with the wider community for a mutual exchange, as well as work towards ensuring that the knowledge and expertise available at the university is of benefit to society. Duties also include research and you are expected to actively apply for external research funding, monitor developments in your own field, and publish papers in international journals.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for the position of senior lecturer in political science, applicants are required have demonstrated teaching expertise. Applicants are also required to hold a PhD or equivalent academic qualifications in political science, or equivalent professional qualifications deemed relevant to the nature of the position and the duties included therein. Pursuant to Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure, teachers must have the personal qualities required to perform the duties included, as well as completed training in higher education pedagogy.

Candidates who have not completed courses in higher education pedagogy may still be hired, provided that they use the time allotted to continual professional development to complete the required courses within two years of employment, or that they apply for validation of prior learning. Assessment criteria

In the assessment of research and teaching expertise, special weight will be given to teaching expertise.

Special weight will be given to

  • teaching expertise, experience in teaching at all levels and experience in course development as well as experience in acting as course and programme coordinator. Teaching expertise must be well documented in a way that allows for quality assessment.
  • written and oral proficiency in Swedish or another Nordic language, since a large portion of the instruction is in Swedish

Considerable weight will be given to

  • relevant and ongoing research.
  • ability to autonomously initiate and conduct research.
  • personal qualities such the ability to show initiative, work in a team and being structured.

Weight will be given to

  • recent experience in collaborating with the wider community and communicating research findings and results of development work.
  • research in psychological defense and related fields of research.
  • teaching experience at master’s level in the field of psychological defense.

Valuable qualifications

  • experience from international mobility, international employment, projects, or national and international networks.
  • secured external research funding.
  • recognised or distinguished teaching skills.
  • administrative experience.
  • ability to teach in English.

Being physically present at the workplace and participating in activities concerning the whole discipline and department are expected.

Terms

This is a permanent full-time position (100%) starting in the autumn semester 2024 or the spring semester 2025 according to agreement. A probationary period may be required.
