The Department of Educational Studies currently has a staff of around 120 employees, about half of whom have a PhD. The department comprises three subjects: Educational Work, Special Education, and Sports Science. The teaching activities of the department is mainly focused on the teacher education programmes.
The department offers a vibrant cross-disciplinary research environment with several specialisations in the areas of education. This is coupled with one of Karlstad University’s largest doctoral programmes, with around 40 doctoral students and multifaceted seminar activities and eight professors, which allows us to offer a stimulating working environment for you and your research.
We are now looking for an associate senior lecturer in special education to join our team. The research specialisation we are looking for mainly concerns conditions for participation in school and society for children/pupils in need of support related to various disabilities. You will be employed as associate senior lecturer in special education, with plenty of opportunities for collaboration with one of the ongoing research projects in the research environment of special education. Since there is close collaboration between the subjects of the department, you will also have the opportunity to participate in other research environments at the department, such as one of the research centres specialising in subject-specific education or the Centre for Child and Childhood Studies in Education and Sport (UBB). We value research that can contribute to a stronger connection to current research in the special education programmes at Karlstad University.
The main duties as associate senior lecturer will consist of research, equivalent to 75% of working hours. Research will be conducted independently, together with other researchers at the department or research colleagues from other universities. The aim is to give you the opportunity to develop your independence as a researcher and gain valuable qualifications in terms of both research and teaching expertise.
The remaining 25% of working hours will include participating in other departmental activities. These activities mainly refer to teaching courses in special education, but it can also be other duties depending on your expertise and the needs of the department. The department’s teaching activities with regard to special education is mainly focused on freestanding courses, programmes in special needs training and master’s programmes in special education as well as parts of other teacher education programmes, which may include lectures, supervision and assessment.
You are also expected to collaborate with the wider community for a mutual exchange, as well as work towards ensuring that the knowledge and expertise available at the university is of benefit to society.
To contribute to a positive working environment and further the department’s activities, we expect you to be a present and active part of the day-to-day operations and workplace community.
To be eligible for the position of associate senior lecturer, applicants are required to hold a PhD or equivalent academic qualifications in special education or educational work or other subject area of relevance to the position. The position is primarily intended for applicants who have completed their PhD no longer than five years before the application deadline. If an applicant completed their PhD or equivalent qualifications more than five years ago, this requirement may be waived if there are special circumstances.
The position requires proficiency in Swedish and English. A candidate who does not meet this requirement may still be hired provided they are able to actively acquire these language skills.
Pursuant to Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure, teachers must have the personal qualities required to perform the duties involved, as well as completed training in higher education pedagogy. In special circumstances, candidates who have not completed courses in higher education pedagogy may still be hired provided that they do so within two years of employment or that they apply for validation of prior learning. Terms for promotion to senior lecturer
Upon applying, an associate senior lecturer should be promoted to senior lecturer provided he or she is qualified for the position (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 4, Sect. 4) and is deemed suitable following an assessment (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 4, Sect. 4a).
To be eligible for promotion, the applicant must, at the time of the application, have completed the required training in higher education pedagogy.
