Description

We are looking for a project assistant for laboratory work in the genetics and ecology of insects. We offer a unique opportunity to gain first-hand experience in a research environment as well as experience with a widely used model organism (Drosophila melanogaster), as well as the potential for field work with wild insects (Odonates) and being part of an expanding evolutionary ecology research group at Karlstad University. Duties

The main duties consist of: 1) routine maintenance of laboratory populations of fruit flies, such as preparing food and transferring flies to new containers according to a set schedule 2) assist in preparing and completing experiments and recording data, including long-term experimental evolution studies, and 3) assist in local field surveys of wild populations of Odonates (damselflies and dragonflies). Work will mainly take place in the laboratory at Karlstad University, but during the spring and summer there is an opportunity for local fieldwork, with a focus on studies of wild insect populations.

Qualifications

Applicants are required to

  • Have a master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., a focus in ecology or evolutionary biology)
  • Have experience handling and working with insects. Prior experience working with fruit flies, and/or Odonates will be given high priority
  • Be proficient in both Swedish and English.
  • Clearly demonstrate an interest in evolutionary biology, genetics or ecology.

Personal qualities such as good cooperative skills, sound judgement, ability to take responsibility, show commitment and a positive attitude towards colleagues. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively. 

Meritorious qualifications

  • Experience with statistical computer programs such as R
  • Driver’s license.

Terms
Fixed-term position, 50% of full-time through December 2024. Start date in April 2024, as agreed by both parties. There may be a possibility for extension depending on external funding
