Karlstad Business School, inaugurated in 2009, comprises the disciplines of Working Life Science, Business Administration, Information Systems, Law, Economics, and Statistics. Our mission at Karlstad Business School is to educate responsible professionals and conduct research with high societal impact. Courses and study programmes on all levels are conducted with a strong basis in research from both specific disciplines as well as interdisciplinary research groups, where the largest research environment is CTF, Service Research Center (www.ctf.kau.se). There is a large network in place, both nationally and internationally, which provides good conditions for new research projects and assignments.
Business Administration is mainly taught within the framework of three degree programmes, Business and Economics, Real Estate Management, and International Business. There are also several Master’s programmes as well as the research programme for doctoral students. Approximately 1,000 students are enrolled in the different study programmes in Economics, and Karlstad Business School as a whole has about 2,600 students.
The purpose of this appointment is to provide the candidate with the opportunity to increase their status as an independent researcher, as well as acquiring further research and teaching qualifications in order to meet the requirements for a permanent position as senior lecturer.
In addition to research, duties also include teaching, supervision, assessment and administration. A certain level of development work within the subject or within Karlstad Business School may also be included. This career-development position includes 75% research and 25% other activities at the department.
Research is primarily focused on financial accounting. The associate senior lecturer is expected to be part of the research group that is currently conducting research in accounting. Scientific publication in international journals is an important part of the research work. In addition, duties also include applying for external research funding and creating networks as well as national and international collaboration with other researchers. This includes active participation in various subject, research and project meetings. You are expected to collaborate with the wider community for a mutual exchange, as well as working towards ensuring that the knowledge and expertise available at the university is of benefit to society. The goal is, thus, for the conducted research to contribute with knowledge of relevance to Karlstad Business School’s external partners.
Teaching may include courses at both undergraduate and Master’s level, on campus, online or through distance learning.
To contribute to a positive work environment and the department’s activities, the associate senior lecturer is expected to be a present and active part of the day-to-day operations and workplace community. This means contributing to Karlstad Business School, CTF and particularly the research environment of Business Administration.
To be eligible for the position of associate senior lecturer, applicants are required to hold a PhD or equivalent academic qualifications in business administration with a specialisation in accounting. The position is primarily intended for applicants who have completed their PhD, or acquired equivalent qualifications, no longer than five years before the application deadline. If an applicant completed their PhD or equivalent qualifications more than five years ago, this requirement may be waived if there are special circumstances. The position requires a good command of Swedish and English.
Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure stipulates that teachers must have the personal qualities required to perform the duties involved, as well as completed training in higher education pedagogy. In special circumstances, candidates who have not completed courses in higher education pedagogy may still be hired provided that they do so within two years of employment or that they apply for validation of prior learning. For other qualification requirements, refer to Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure.
A primary assessment criterion is the ability to develop the research and teaching expertise required for an appointment to senior lecturer, as well as documented ability and willingness to pursue an academic career, and the potential to contribute to the development of research and education in business administration with a specialisation in accounting. The candidate’s ability to produce academic publications is central and of particular importance in the assessment.
Special weight will be given to previous experience and future willingness to conduct research in accounting, in particular financial accounting. Sound knowledge of quantitative method is also of special weight. This knowledge will be required in both research and teaching.
In the assessment of teaching expertise, weight will be given to demonstrated teaching expertise based on sound, broad and up-to-date knowledge within the applicant’s own subject area based on evidence and established knowledge of learning and assessment.
Current experience of collaborating with the wider community and of disseminating research findings and development work will also be of importance. Documented ability to secure research funding is a valuable qualification, as is experience from international employment, projects, and national and international networks. Considerable weight will be given to personal qualities such as the ability to cooperate, take responsibility and show sound judgement and commitment, as well as a positive attitude towards colleagues and students.
This is a temporary 4-year full-time position. Start date as agreed by both parties.
Upon applying, an associate senior lecturer should be promoted to senior lecturer provided he or she is qualified for the position (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 4, Sect. 4) and is deemed suitable following an assessment (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 4, Sect. 4a).
