Description

The Faculty of Health, Science and Technology is accepting applications for a senior lectureship in Mathematics Education at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.

The discipline offers courses and study programmes at both undergraduate and Master’s level as well as conducting research and offering doctoral courses in mathematics and mathematics education. The research environment is part of the research centre SMEER (Science, Mathematics and Engineering Education Research), which currently houses 18 senior researchers and 20 doctoral students. Subject-specific education research at Karlstad University includes a large number of international and interdisciplinary research projects and practice-based research in collaboration with schools, involving researchers from mathematics education. The research in mathematics education at the department is primarily focused on learning and teaching with digital tools, professional development for teachers, and preschool mathematics education. Duties

Duties comprise teaching, course development, course coordination, research, and supervision of degree projects in mathematics education in the university’s teacher education programmes specialising in preschool, primary or secondary education. Continuing professional development and research are regulated in a local agreement.

You are expected to collaborate with the wider community in a mutual exchange, and work towards ensuring that the knowledge and expertise available at the university is of benefit to society. To contribute to a positive work environment and further department activities, you are expected to be a present and active part of the day-to-day operations and workplace community.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for the position of senior lecturer in Mathematics Education, applicants are required to have demonstrated teaching expertise and hold a PhD in Mathematics Education, or equivalent academic qualifications or professional expertise deemed relevant to the nature of the position and the duties included therein.

Since Swedish is the language of instruction in the majority of courses, proficiency in spoken and written Swedish is required.

Pursuant to Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure, teachers must have the personal qualities required to perform the duties included, as well as completed courses in higher education pedagogy.

Candidates who have not completed courses in higher education pedagogy may still be hired, provided that they use the time alloted to continual professional development to complete the required courses within two years of employment, or that they apply for validation of prior learning. Assessment criteria

In the assessment, equal weight will be given to teaching and research expertise.

Special weight will be given to:

  • documented experience in teaching mathematics and mathematics education within
    teacher education,
  • documented teaching expertise,
  • strong research credentials and documented ability to successfully apply for and secure external research funding, both nationally and internationally.

Considerable weight will be given to:

  • documented experience in teaching and development work related to mathematics in extended school, preschool and/or primary and secondary school,
  • personal qualities such as the ability to cooperate, take initiative and show commitment to the work and a positive attitude towards colleagues and students.

Teaching awards are valuable qualifications.

Terms

This is a permanent full-time position. Start date as agreed upon by both parties.

  • no more than 10 scientific publications and no more than 5 materials intended to convey knowledge, such as textbooks, computer programs for teaching, or popular science articles
  • two references, at least one of which is a current or former supervisor
