Description

In collaboration with the Centre for Social Science Didactics (CSD) and Religious Studies at Karlstad University, the Department of Educational Studies is accepting applications for a doctoral studentship in Educational Work with focus on religious education. Educational Work is a cross-disciplinary subject and a profession-oriented area of knowledge that focuses on the practice-based issues and phenomena that are central in educational work. The subject encompasses the work of pupils and teachers, the socialisation and learning of children and young people inside and outside the classroom, as well as other situations related to teaching and learning. Research in the field of religious studies at Karlstad University has a strong emphasis on contemporary, lived religion, social relevance, and field studies, looking at religion from a local, national, and international perspective with a particular focus on India.  You can find more information here. Research at CSD focuses on subject-specific education and is characterised by a close link between theory and practice and is often conducted in close collaboration with schools and teacher education programmes. Religious education looks at how religion is taught and studied in different contexts and needs to be based on subject-specific education theory and method as well as solid knowledge of religion and the methodological and theoretical study of religion. The doctoral studentship will focus on religious education research of relevance to teaching religion in school. The applicant’s research plan should relate to CSD’s strategic plan (available here) to strengthen the subject-specific education research and the foundation of knowledge for religious education in school.

Duties
A doctoral student is primarily expected to engage in their doctoral studies. The doctoral programme comprises 240 credits for a Degree of Doctor, including the doctoral thesis, and 120 credits for a Degree of Licentiate. The doctoral student is expected to work independently and be prepared to contribute to the activities and development of the subject and the department. The position will be placed with CSD and the Department of Political, Historical, Religious and Cultural Studies. Upon agreement, teaching and administrative duties may also be included, referred to as departmental duties. Such duties may not constitute more than 20% of full-time. Qualification requirements

To be eligible for doctoral studies, the applicant must meet the general and specific entry requirements (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 7, Sect. 35). To meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have been awarded a second-cycle qualification, satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad (Higher Education Ordinance Chap. 7, Sect. 39).

To meet the specific entry requirements for doctoral studies in Educational Work, the applicant must have completed a degree in education in Sweden or abroad. An applicant can also meet the specific entry requirements by in some other way having acquired equivalent prerequisite knowledge, in the Sweden or abroad. Applicants who do not hold a degree in education must specify in the application what they wish to refer to as equivalent knowledge.

Admission and assessment criteria

The assessment will focus on the applicant’s performance in previous studies, the quality of degree projects and other publications, research plan, language skills, and whether the applicant intends to be a present and active part of the research environment. Special weight will be given to the contents and structure of the research plan, where the applicant describes the intended thesis project. The research plan of approximately 1,000-2,500 words should outline the intended thesis project and its research domain, theory, and method, as well as how it relates to the above-stated research specialisation. Considerable weight will be given to personal qualities such as the ability to cooperate, take responsibility, show sound judgement, dedication, and a positive attitude towards colleagues and students. Master’s level studies with a specialisation in religious studies and/or history of religions are valuable qualifications.

The doctoral studentship in Educational Work also involves active participation in research and seminar environments. In addition, applicants should be proficient in spoken and written English.

Terms

Upon admission to doctoral studies, the candidate will be employed on a doctoral studentship (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 5, Sect. 3). The position comprises four years of full-time studies, or five years at a study rate of 80% with 20% teaching or other departmental duties. The position is fixed-term — one year initially, followed by possible extensions by a maximum of two years at a time. Start date 1 august or by agreement.  The salary for the doctoral studentship corresponds to the standard level of salary for doctoral students at Karlstad University.
