The Faculty of Health, Science, and Technology is seeking a Development Engineer to be based in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, which comprises two research subjects, Mathematics and Computer Science, has approximately 90 employees. Computer Science is one of Karlstad University's prioritized research environments and focuses on data networks and distributed systems, data security, and software quality. Research is under strong development and takes place in close collaboration with international, national, and regional actors in both academia and industry. Among other things, we collaborate with external partners to run a measurement platform for 5G/Starlink and are building a test environment for future flexible and programmable communication networks (6G). Therefore, we need you who have good knowledge of both hardware and software and are interested in working with technology at the forefront of research.

Job duties

The job duties consist of technical development, support, and assistance in building and maintaining test beds, developing software, and providing support for data analysis and measurements, as well as participating in the daily work of operating, maintaining, and developing the IT environment within computer science. The work is carried out independently but in collaboration with a local support group. The employment also includes collaboration with other parts of the university and the surrounding society, and it is therefore important that those who may be eligible for the position have good skills in cooperating with other groups. To contribute to a good working environment and the development of the business, you are on-site and participate in the daily work and community. 

Common job duties include:

  • Program and system development for research and educational projects.
  • Set-up of test beds (system design, installation, configuration, integration), including for mobile data communication and artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML).
  • Linux system administration.
  • System documentation.
  • Management of virtual machines.
  • Management of networks and firewalls.
  • Information storage and data processing.

 Qualifications

Eligible for the position is someone with at least a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or IT, or equivalent. Furthermore, the applicant must have good knowledge and experience of software development and Linux system administration. 

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science is international, and English is often the language used. Therefore, it is important that the applicant has good skills in English, both spoken and written.

Assessment criteria

It is meritorious to have a Master's or Civil Engineering degree in Computer Science, Data Science, IT, or equivalent.

Great emphasis is placed on practical knowledge and skills in some of the areas of data communication, mobile broadband (5G/O-RAN), data security, data storage, data analysis, AI/ML, virtualization (VMware, Docker, Kubernetes), Jupytherhub, Linux, kernel development, and computer hardware.

Great emphasis is placed on the applicant's personal qualities, such as the ability to collaborate, the ability to build good relationships, and the ability to take initiatives.

It is also meritorious to have good knowledge of the Swedish language, both spoken and written.

Conditions

The employment is permanent full-time. The start date is June 1, 2023, or by agreement. A trial period may be applied.
