Description

Ingesund School of Music (Musikhögskolan Ingesund, MHI) is part of the Department of Artistic Studies at Karlstad University and constitutes the University’s second campus, located in Arvika. MHI is a renowned university college with healthy student recruitment. MHI offers a music teacher programme with a specialisation in upper secondary school, intended to qualify graduates to teach in upper secondary school, compulsory school, or performing arts schools. In the spring of 2020, the results of the Swedish Higher Education Authority’s (UKÄ) quality review of the Music Teacher Programme were presented. The overall assessment was that the programme as a whole is of high quality. The following are a few quotes from the review:

There is a good connection between research and education, and the assessment panel particularly wants to emphasise the close collaboration between theory and practice incorporated in the programme with room for both artistic and educational components.” (UKÄ)

“The programme meets the intended learning outcome of subject-specific knowledge for professional practice, including current research and development work, and is considered to be of high quality by the assessors. The assessment panel finds that the structure of the programme, with its clear composition that offers both range and depth, clear progression and opportunities for students to combine different courses, contributes to this. In addition, all of the assessed independent projects show high goal attainment. The assessment panel finds it particularly positive that the students encounter literature and research on music education and pedagogy within both courses in subject-specific education and the core education subjects.” (UKÄ)

MHI and Karlstad University are now also entitled to award Master’s level qualifications in the fine, applied, and performing arts. The Master’s Programme in Music opens in the autumn semester of 2023. The Bachelor’s Programme in Music opened in the autumn of 2016 and the Music Production Programme opened in the autumn of 2018. MHI is, in other words, in the midst of a strong growth period.

Music education is an interdisciplinary subject area that focuses on all forms of knowledge development and learning in the subject of music, where different social, cultural and educational dimensions of learning are taken into account. The subject area has a bearing on teaching and education and thus forms an important basis for the study programmes that MHI offers.

We are now looking for a senior lecturer in music education with a specialisation in teaching methodology, placed at Ingesund School of Music. Visit our website for more information: https://www.kau.se/en/ingesund-school-music

Work is placed at Ingesund School of Music in Arvika.

Applicants must also have documented teaching expertise as well as a completed course in higher education pedagogy, or equivalent knowledge. An applicant who has not completed a course in higher education pedagogy can still be eligible for the position provided that they use the time allotted for professional development to complete the course within two years of employment.

Pursuant to Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure, teachers must have the personal qualities required to perform the duties involved. Special weight will be given to the applicant’s documented teaching expertise as well as documented research expertise in music education as the area of expertise.

Special weight will also be given to experience of teaching in upper secondary school, compulsory school, or performing arts schools, especially instrumental and ensemble teaching, but also other music courses at different levels.

A Master in Education in Music or equivalent education is also of special weight.

Considerable weight will be given to experience of teaching courses in teaching methodology in music education at university level, as well as experience of supervising and assessing independent projects at university level.
