We are looking for a professor in Gender studies as part of the Department of Social and Psychological Studies within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The department also includes Psychology, Social work, and Sociology. Gender studies is closely connected to the Centre for Gender Studies (CGF), which is organised in the following research streams: Masculinity Studies, Transgender Studies, Action for Organisational Change, and Gender, Health and Technology. All research areas are characterised by a combination of theoretical innovation and applied research in collaboration with various stakeholders in order to contribute to innovation and applicability of research results. The subject of Gender studies offers undergraduate education up to master level, including online and campus courses, in Swedish and English. CGF is an interdisciplinary, cross-faculty research centre and collaborates with subjects and research centres within the entire university.
We are seeking a candidate who is ready to take on the role as head of subject with the overall responsibility for research, as well as representing the subject’s research on a department and faculty level. The head of subject is also obliged to ensure the development and continued high quality of the subject’s education, research, and collaboration. Gender studies is currently not a postgraduate subject, and the recruitment of a new professor is part of the ambition to make Gender studies into a postgraduate subject at Karlstad University. One of duties in the position will be to create the best possible conditions to realise this ambition together with the current professor and fellow colleagues in Gender studies. Today, there is a close collaboration with the subject of Sociology regarding doctoral students and PhD-education. CGF is also part of the international graduate school InterGender.
As a professor, you are responsible for leading and developing research activities and the research environment, and we therefore welcome candidates whose research is connected to one or more of the research profiles at CGF and in the subject of Gender studies. You are expected to actively pursue external funding and develop quality marked procedures for applications to various external funding bodies. Duties also include funds application for doctoral students. You are also expected to further collaboration with the local community and the regional county in addition to national and international research cooperation. To contribute to a dynamic work environment, we expect you to be a present and active part of the day-to-day operations and workplace community. Academic duties include, research, teaching, supervision, outreach activities and administration connected to these duties.
To be eligible for the position of professor in Gender studies, applicants are required to hold a PhD in the subject or equivalent qualifications in a closely related subject, as well as having documented research and teaching expertise. The position requires a good command of Swedish and English.
Pursuant to Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure, teachers must have the personal qualities required to perform the duties involved. A professor must also have completed a course in higher education pedagogy. In special circumstances, the course in higher education pedagogy may be completed within two years of employment. For other eligibility requirements, refer to the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4 Section 3, and Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure.
Equal weight will be given to research and teaching expertise.
Special weight will be given to recognised cooperation skills, strong academic leadership qualities, and the ability to contribute significantly to a good research environment.
Considerable weight will be given to administrative skill and familiarity with the academic system for higher education in the Nordics.
In the assessment of research expertise, a valuable qualification is recently documented ability to secure funding for research, as is experience from international assignments or national and international networks.
Another valuable qualification is prior administrative experience in the leadership of research and experience in research in any of the specialisations or areas represented within CGF and the subject of gender studies.
Up-to-date experience with community collaboration and dissemination of research findings and development work is also seen as a valuable qualification.
This is a permanent full-time position starting at the earliest convenience, as agreed upon by both parties. We expect the person appointed to be physically present in our environment.
