The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is accepting applications for a doctoral studentship leading to a PhD in History at the Department of Political, Historical, Religious and Cultural Studies.

Besides History, the department also includes Cultural Studies, Religious Studies, Civics, Risk and Environmental Studies, and Political Science. The subject of History offers courses and programmes at undergraduate, Master’s, and doctoral level. We also offer courses in archival science, and the subject plays an important role in the University’s teacher education programmes.

We are now looking for another doctoral student to join our subject!

You will be part of a group of researchers and supervisors who are active within, for example, social and political history, cultural and gender history, history of education, and subject-specific education in history. We have collaborations with Linköping University and the University of Gothenburg. During your time as a doctoral student at Karlstad University, you will have the opportunity to take courses at other universities as well.

Duties

A doctoral student is primarily expected to engage in their doctoral studies. The doctoral programme comprises 240 credits for a Degree of Doctor, including the doctoral thesis, and 120 credits for a Degree of Licentiate. The doctoral student is expected to work independently and be prepared to contribute to the activities and development of the subject and the department. Teaching and administration may also be included in the duties, but will not constitute more than 20% of full-time.

In order to contribute to a positive working environment and help further the subject’s activities, we expect you to be a present and active part of the day-to-day operations and workplace community.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for doctoral studies, the applicant must meet the general and specific entry requirements (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 7, Sect. 35).

To meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have been awarded a second-cycle (Master’s level) qualification, satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 7, Sect. 39).

To meet the specific entry requirements for doctoral studies in History, the applicant must have been awarded a second-cycle qualification with a major in History (or equivalent in History of Ideas or Economic History) and completed courses in History totalling at least 120 credits, of which 30 credits were awarded in the second-cycle and include a degree project of at least 15 credits. An applicant can also meet the specific entry requirements by in some other way having acquired equivalent prerequisite knowledge, in the Sweden or abroad.

Admission and assessment criteria

To be eligible for doctoral studies, the applicant must be considered to have the ability required to benefit from the programme (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 7, Sect. 35). Admission is based on individual assessment. The language of instruction is primarily Swedish.

Special weight will be given to the applicant’s results in previous studies, the quality of the independent projects completed during these studies, and the applicant’s research plan. We will also consider the applicant’s intention to be a present and active part in the development of the research environment. Oral and written communication skills are also taken into account in the assessment.

We welcome all specialisations, but may prioritise applicants who match the subject’s research specialisations and available supervisor expertise.

Terms

Upon admission to doctoral studies, the person will be offered the appointment of doctoral student (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 5, Sect. 3). The position comprises four years of full-time studies, or five years at a study rate of 80% with 20% teaching or other departmental duties. The position is fixed-term — one year initially, followed by possible extensions by a maximum of two years at a time. Start date by agreement.

The salary for the doctoral studentship corresponds to the standard level of salary for doctoral students at Karlstad University.
