The Department of Social and Psychological Studies welcomes applicants for a senior lectureship in Social Work.

Description 

Social Work is part of the Department of Social and Psychological Studies along with Sociology, Psychology, and Gender Studies. The Department has a staff of 90, within the discipline of Social Work, a staff of 25 work with education, research, and external contacts. The discipline houses the Bachelor of Science in Social Work study programme and its 350 students. In addition to first-cycle education, we offer secondcycle and third-cycle studies.

Our research in social work at Karlstad University is primarily conducted within two research domains; Critical Welfare Studies and Applied Welfare Research. Research is also conducted within the framework of the multidisciplinary Forum for Violence Studies and Violence Prevention. Examples of current research studies within the framework of Critical Welfare Studies include the role of civil society in social welfare, the working conditions for people in elderly care, critical perspectives on social issues concerning girls’ living conditions, as well as studies on international migration. The framework of Applied Welfare Research includes projects focusing on children’s and young people’s mental health, honour related violence and oppression, assessments and support within social services, as well as studies on service user involvement. As our new senior lecturer, you will have great opportunities to contribute to our current research domains or introduce new research fields. FoU Välfärd Värmland is a centre in which the 16 municipalities of Värmland, Karlstad University and Region Värmland jointly contribute to the development of knowledge-based welfare activities. The Centre is based here at Karlstad University and contributes to a unique and lively organisation with practice-based research, evaluations, seminars and conferences.

Duties

Your main duties will be instruction within the Bachelor of Science in Social Work study programme, which includes course coordination, supervision, and examination. You are also expected to participate actively in research, conduct your own research projects, and apply for external funding. Each and every employee plays a crucial part in our activities! Therefore, you are expected to take an active role in development and quality assurance, and to keep abreast of the trends within the discipline and of societal trends that affect social work. Additionally, supervision and teaching at a Master’s and third-cycle level may be required.

Qualification requirements 

To be eligible, applicants are required to hold a PhD in Social Work or equivalent academic qualifications in another discipline that is relevant to the position. You are required to have documented pedagogical skill and have completed a course in higher education pedagogy. In special circumstances, the course in higher education pedagogy may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment.

Since the language of instruction is primarily Swedish and potentially sometimes English, you are required to have a good command of written and spoken Swedish and English.

Assessment criteria 

Special and equal weight will be given to the demonstration of scientific and pedagogical skill in social work. Documentation of scientific and pedagogical skill is required for the assessment of its range and quality. We also consider experience in teaching Social Work is valuable qualification.

Considerable weight will be given to administrative skills and the ability for academic cooperation and collaboration with the larger community. For the purposes of this appointment, we value personal qualities that contributing to a positive working environment, such as the ability to cooperate, the ability to build good relations with colleagues, and a positive attitude towards colleagues and students. Considerable weight will also be given to the applicant’s sense of responsibility for their own duties, their ability to work independently, and their initiative.

Expertise in areas such as the elderly, disabilities or leadership and organisation are valuable qualifications. 

Following a qualitative holistic review of competence, skills, and personal qualities, the applicant deemed to have the best ability to perform and develop the duties at hand as well as contribute to the positive development of the Bachelor of Science in Social Work study programme and Social Work as a discipline will be appointed. If applicants have qualifications of equal value, priority will be given to the applicant whose experience in research and teaching is deemed most relevant to the discipline’s operations. Terms 

This is a permanent full-time position starting at the earliest convenience, as agreed upon by both parties. To best facilitate good cooperation and a positive working environment, we would like you to be physically present at the Department as much as possible. A probationary period may be required.
