Would you like the opportunity to build on our successful research and teaching in Public Health Science at Karlstad University?
Public Health Science belongs to the Department of Health Sciences within the Faculty of Health, Science and Technology. The subject’s research and teaching are primarily focused on the lives and health of children. There are three medical tracks: Environmental Health, specialized in environmental factors early on in life and how they affect children’s health and development; Community Medicine, focused on vulnerable children, domestic violence and health-promoting environments; and Medical Science, including human anatomy, physiology and pathology.
The subject’s renowned and experienced researchers generate a high academic output together with the subject’s doctoral students, currently comprising seven students. Several large research studies are currently conducted, one of which is the SELMA study, which follows over 2,000 sets of mothers and children from the early stages of pregnancy through delivery and beyond. Focus is on environmental factors, genetics, and children’s health and development in a broad sense (www.selmastudien.se). Our research is conducted in close cooperation with top-tier national and international institutions where we connect our epidemiological studies with experimental toxicology in cellular and animal models to develop improved risk assessment systems for hazardous chemicals. The research is funded by research councils both nationally (Swedish Research Council and Formas) and within the EU and US.
Our courses and study programmes share a natural interface with our research, a crucial factor in ensuring a disciplinary foundation for our teaching. Public health science constitutes a main field of study in degrees on a bachelor, master (60 and 120 ECTS credits) and doctoral level. We are now looking for a professor of public health science with a clear specialisation in environmental epidemiology and highly experienced of biostatistics and advanced methods for modelling of how genetics and epigenetics can interact with environmental factors. The professorship offers excellent opportunities to develop and conduct original research within the SELMA study, which forms the basis for large national and international collaborations, including five EU projects. In the long term, there is an opportunity to function as project manager for the SELMA study. You will be expected to apply for research funding and conduct your own research as well as supervising doctoral students. The position also includes further development of the subject’s courses and programmes, especially within environment and health as well as quantitative methods where we offer courses at bachelor, master and doctoral level. We also welcome that you contribute with new national and international networks to further strengthen our strong position within environmental epidemiology and external collaboration with experimental toxicology in cellular and animal models. Work is conducted in an ever-changing and creative environment where you will play an active role in research and education and the integration of the two. To contribute to a positive work environment and the department’s activities, you will be a present and active part of the day-to-day operations and workplace community.
