Description

The Department of Environmental and Life Sciences at the Faculty of Health, Science and Technology is comprised of the subjects Biology and Geomatics. In Biology, the main part of the teaching activities consists of teaching courses within the University’s teacher education programmes. The subject is responsible for teaching biology with focus on teaching and education in all of the teacher education programmes, at all levels. At Karlstad University, teacher education and subject-specific education research have special priority. The subject-specific research is organised in research centres, SMEER (Science, Mathematics and Engineering Education Research), being the node for research in science (biology, physics and chemistry), mathematics and engineering education. The research environment consists of researchers in subject-specific education who, in addition to research and teaching, are engaged in seminar activities in collaboration with different departments, organisations and higher education institutions. Duties 

The main duties consist of teaching and conducting research. Teaching includes supervising degree projects, course development and acting as course director. The position entails teaching courses included in the teacher education programmes for early years education, primary education and secondary education, as well as the bridging programme in secondary education. Teaching of other courses in biology may be included in the position, depending on the senior lecturer’s qualifications and expertise. Duties also include research that is expected to complement the education research within the research group, focusing on biology and science education. We expect the senior lecturer to initiate new externally funded education research projects in collaboration with colleagues in the research group, as well as supervising future doctoral students.

Administration is also included in the duties. To contribute to a positive working environment and help further the subject’s activities, we expect you to be present and actively participate in the day-to-day operations and workplace community.

Qualification requirements 

To be eligible for the position of senior lecturer in biology with a specialisation in education, applicants are required have demonstrated teaching expertise. In addition, applicants are required to have a Degree of Doctor or equivalent academic expertise in biology with a specialisation in education or in science with a specialisation in education, or a Degree of Doctor in biology with acquired competence and experience of education research, alternatively equivalent professional qualifications deemed relevant to the nature of the position and the duties included therein.

Pursuant to Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure, teachers must have the personal qualities required to perform the required duties, as well as a completed course in higher education pedagogy. In special circumstances, the course in higher education pedagogy may be completed within two years of employment. Since Swedish is the language of instruction in the majority of courses, proficiency in spoken and written Swedish is required. Proficiency in English is also a requirement. A candidate who does not meet this requirement may still be hired provided they are able to actively acquire the necessary language skills.

Assessment criteria

Equal weight will be given to research and teaching expertise.

Special weight will be given to:

  • documented and demonstrated research expertise in biology education or science education
  • documented and demonstrated teaching expertise in biology or science education within teacher education, based on planning, execution and evaluation of teaching, as well as supervision and assessment.

Considerable weight will be given to:

  • experience of teaching biology in preschool, primary school and/or secondary school
  • experience of teaching within teacher education
  • Degree of Master of Arts in Primary Education or Master of Education for the Upper Secondary School, including courses in biology or science
  • how well the applicant’s research complements and enriches the research group’s current education research expertise, for example, by contributing new methods or areas of expertise.
  • Ranking is based on the scope, depth and relevance of the applicant’s expertise. previous success in securing external funds, preferably substantial grants.
  • personal qualities such as the ability to cooperate, take initiative, show commitment and a positive attitude towards colleagues and students.

Weight will be given to:

  • advanced subject knowledge in biology
  • experience of disseminating research findings to various groups in society
  • the ability to collaborate both within the academic community as well as with external partners
  • the scope of the applicant’s network of international and national contacts within the field
  • experience of supervising doctoral students. 

Terms

Permanent, full-time position (100%). Planned start date is 1 March 2023, or by agreement. A probationary period may be required.
