The Department of Geography, Media and Communication (GMK) invites applications for a doctoral position in media and communication studies. The position entails full-time funding of a doctoral study programme leading to a doctor’s degree. The position is funded by the Centre for Geomedia Studies (Geomedia) – an interdisciplinary research environment consisting of researchers mainly from media studies and human geography – and the applicant’s thesis proposal should be related to a research area that is of relevance to Geomedia. Doctoral studies and duties

The doctoral study programme comprises 240 higher education credits (ECTS), including the doctoral thesis. Doctoral students primarily pursue their own studies but may perform other duties of no more than 20% of full time, e.g., teaching (where language skills make this possible) or administrative duties. To contribute to a positive work environment and the department’s activities, the doctoral student will be a present and active part of the day-to-day operations and workplace community.

Eligibility and assessment criteria

Applicants to doctoral studies must meet the general admission requirements as well as the specific eligibility requirements and be judged to have the ability otherwise required to pursue the programme successfully. (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 7, Sect. 35).

 The requirements for general eligibility for admission are a Master’s degree of at least 240 ECTS of which at least 60 ECTS are studies at Master’s level, or equivalent qualifications acquired in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

 The specific eligibility requirements for third-cycle studies in Media and Communication Studies are courses of at least 90 ECTS in media and communication studies or journalism corresponding to basic, intermediate and advanced levels, or equivalent qualifications acquired in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Admission and assessment criteria

To be eligible for doctoral studies, the applicant must be considered to have the ability required to benefit from the programme (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 7, Sect. 35). Admission is based on individual assessment.

In the ranking of applicants, special weight is given to the thesis proposal/the academic quality and originality of the proposed thesis topic. Special weight is also given to how the proposed topic fits into the research areas of Geomedia.

Applicants are also assessed and ranked on the basis of their previous studies with special emphasis on the quality of their submitted independent research-related works, especially at Master’s level. Consideration is also given to the applicant’s plans to be involved in the departmental research environment on a daily basis. Additionally, considerable weight will be given to the applicant’s ability for independent work as well as team work, and capacity for taking initiatives.

Terms

Upon admission to doctoral studies, the person will be offered the appointment of doctoral student (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 5, Sect. 3). The position comprises four years of full-time studies, or five years at a study rate of 80% with 20% teaching or other departmental duties. The position is fixed-term: one year initially, followed by possible extensions by a maximum of two years at a time. A prerequisite is that the necessary decisions are made. Start date 1 January 2023 at the earliest, or as negotiated. The position is based in Karlstad. The salary for the doctoral studentship corresponds to the standard level of salary for doctoral students at Karlstad University.
