Description

Since 2017, Karlstad University offers a complete law degree (270 ECTS credits). This is Sweden’s seventh Law programme. The programme provides a fundamental education in Law, with specialisations in tax law, business law, criminal law/procedural law, and human law. Graduates are qualified for service as law clerks. Furthermore, the subject offers a range of course mainly directed at students within the Business and Economics programme, the Real Estate Management programme, the Human Resource Management and Working Life programme, the Political Science programme and the Bachelor of Science in Social Work programme. The subject of Law currently employs around 20 people, including six professors, one associate professor, four senior lecturers, one lecturer and seven doctoral students.

In addition to the continuous development of our degree programmes, Karlstad Business School is also focusing on developing our research in the field of law. In December 2014, a doctoral programme in Law was established, comprising eight specialisations: jurisprudence, civil law, financial law, international law, environmental law, public law, procedural law and criminal law. The subject is now planning for recruitments within several central areas and subdivisions of law, which is why we are currently accepting applications for a senior lectureship in Jurisprudence, Civil Law, Environmental Law or Public Law with a specialisation in Human Law.

Duties

Main duties comprise teaching Human Law and related subjects such as Jurisprudence, Social Law, Environmental Law, Immigration Law or similar. Instruction in adjacent subject areas may be required. Duties comprises planning, execution, and evaluation teaching both bachelor’s and master’s courses, as well as supervision of independent projects and degree projects. We are looking for a senior lecturer and skilled teacher, who actively wants to participate in the development of the new bachelor’s and master’s programmes, as well as the doctoral programme—which is offered in collaboration with other universities. 20% of the working hours are earmarked for continuing professional development. You are expected to participate actively in applying for external funds and in the development of the subject’s external contacts. We are aiming for a development and reinforcement of the research conducted within the field of Human Law. You are expected to collaborate with the wider community for a mutual exchange, as well as work towards ensuring that the knowledge and expertise available at the university is of benefit to society.

In order to contribute to a positive working environment and help further the subject’s activities, we expect you to be a present and active part of the day-to-day operations and workplace community.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for the position of senior lecturer, demonstrated teaching expertise is required. Beyond that, a Degree of Doctor of Laws or equivalent academic expertise in Jurisprudence, Civil Law, Environmental Law, Public Law or adjacent fields, or equivalent professional qualifications deemed relevant to the nature of the position and the duties included therein.  
Applicants must have documented teachings skills at university level, as well as current research experience in the field of human law.

Pursuant to Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure, teachers must have the personal qualities required to perform the required duties, as well as a completed course in higher education pedagogy.

Candidates who have not completed a course in higher education pedagogy may still be hired, provided that they use the time allotted to continual professional development to complete the required course within two years of employment, or that they apply for validation of prior learning. Assessment criteria

In the assessment, equal weight will be given to research and teaching expertise. Special weight will be given to research related to the field of human law, as well as any qualifications and expertise that could contribute to the development of the subject’s research in this field. Special weight will be given to the ability to plan, conduct, and evaluate teaching, as well as supervision and examination. 

The language of instruction is Swedish. Hence, special weight will be given to proficiency in spoken and written Swedish.

Special weight will also be given to the applicant’s expertise in Human Law and related subjects such as Jurisprudence, Social Law, Environmental Law, Immigration Law and similar.

Considerable weight will be given to national and international networking ability, both within and outside of the academic world, as well as successfully apply for external funds. 

Considerable weight will also be placed on personal qualities such as taking initiative, dedication and the ability to cooperate. Administrative skills is also subject to assessment.

Experience in supervising doctoral students is considered a valuable qualification. Applicants should have strong leadership qualities and excellent teamwork abilities to successfully contribute to the development of the organisation.

Terms

A permanent full-time position starting at the earliest convenience, as agreed upon by both parties. A probationary period may be required.

  • no more than 10 scientific publications and no more than 5 materials intended to convey knowledge, such as textbooks, computer programs for teaching, or popular science articles
  • two references, at least one of which is a current or former supervisor
