We are now accepting applications for a senior lectureship in Cultural Studies with a specialisation in Art History and Visual Studies. Cultural Studies is offered as freestanding courses or as part of the Culture, Policy and Management Programme, in which it serves as the main field of study for the Degree of Bachelor. The programme is primarily focused on cultural policy, an independent policy area formed in the second half of the 1900s, concerned with culture as a sector. The programme also covers contemporary artistic and cultural expressions, as well as cultural heritage. Characteristic for the programme is collaboration with external partners from the cultural sector, as well as local and regional projects in collaboration with art and culture organisations. The research is tied to KuFo (the Research Group for Culture Studies), which is a prioritised research group at Karlstad University. Since 2019, Cultural Studies also offers master’s courses.
Cultural Studies also offers courses in Art History and Visual Studies as well as the History of Ideas, either as programme specialisations or freestanding courses. We are looking for a senior lecturer with expertise in Art History and Visual Studies, more specifically expertise related to cultural heritage, cultural policy the contemporary cultural sector.
The position comprises three main duties.
The first main duty consists of supervision and teaching bachelor’s and master’s courses. Course coordination and programme leadership may also be required. You will have significant responsibility for both the bachelor's course in Art History and Visual Studies and for relevant cultural policy modules in the Culture, Policy and Management Programme, as well as master’s level courses related to cultural studies. The language of instruction is primarily Swedish.
The second main duty is conducting research. You are expected to actively apply for external funding, as well as publications in both national and international forums.
The third main duty consists of contributing to the development of the development of the subject, as well as collaboration with external partners from the cultural sector. You will also cooperate with Cultural Studies teachers specialised in Art History and Visual Studies, as well as other teachers involved in the Culture, Policy and Management Programme and teachers specialised in the History of Ideas.

To be eligible for employment as senior lecturer in Cultural Studies with a specialisation in Art History and Visual Studies. Applicants are required to hold a PhD in Art History or Art History and Visual Studies or equivalent qualifications deemed relevant to the nature of the position and the duties included therein. Demonstrated teaching expertise is also required.
Pursuant to Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure, teachers must have the personal qualities required to perform the duties required, as well as a completed course in higher education pedagogy. Candidates who have not completed a course in higher education pedagogy may still be hired, provided that they use the time allotted to continual professional development to complete the required course within two years of employment, or apply for validation of prior learning.
