Description

The discipline of Biology has a staff of around 40 and belongs to the Department of Environmental and Life Sciences within the Faculty of Health, Science and Technology. The Biology discipline offers the degrees of Bachelor, Master, or Master of Science in Secondary Education in Biology and Science.

Biology is a third-cycle discipline with 18 doctoral students currently enrolled. The discipline’s primary research areas are ecology and biology didactics. Research in biology didactics is conducted within the SMEER research centre (Science, Mathematics and Engineering Education Research) https://www.kau.se/en/smeer 

The River Ecology and Management Research Group (RivEM) conducts basic and applied research on lakes, watercourses, and surrounding areas. RivEM is an integral part of the discipline’s research and is primarily focused on the sustainable use of natural resources to solve environmental problems in ways that are mutually beneficial to human society and nature. RivEM research areas include the effects of hydropower on connectivity and habitat, aquatic-terrestrial interactions, winter ecology during climate change, endangered species, nature conservation, and socioecological research https://www.kau.se/en/nrrv. Many research projects are carried out in collaboration with industry partners, government agencies, special interest groups, and land owners.

Duties

The position of senior lecturer in Biology with a specialization in Zoology comprises teaching and research. The senior lecturer is expected to participate in planning, conducting, and evaluating teaching, primarily for Zoology and Cell Biology courses within the Biology Program, and to some extent the Secondary Education Program in Biology and Science. Duties may include teaching portions of Master program courses in ecology and nature conservation, and supervision of degree projects at the Bachelor’s and Master’s level. We want our new senior lecturer to be a dedicated and skillful educator who will take an active role in developing the discipline’s teaching and research. The applicant is expected to actively contribute to the development of the discipline’s external network and to new externally funded research projects. We welcome all zoological research that complements RivEMs research expertise.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for the position of senior lecturer in biology, applicants are required to hold a PhD or equivalent in biology and be able to demonstrate proficiency in teaching, or equivalent professional qualifications deemed relevant to the nature of the position and the duties included therein.

Pursuant to the Karlstad University Appointments Procedure, teachers must have the personal qualities required to perform the duties involved, as well as a completed course in higher education pedagogy. In special circumstances, the course in higher education pedagogy may be completed within two years of employment. Assessment criteria

In the appointment, equal weight will be given to academic and pedagogical skill.

In the selection of eligible applicants, special weight will be given to

  • comprehensive and documented research qualifications in Zoology.
  • comprehensive and documented pedagogical expertise, based on the planning, execution, and evaluation of instruction, supervision, and examination.

In the selection of eligible applicants, considerable weight will be given to

  • previous success in securing—preferably substantial—external funds.
  • how well the applicant’s research complements the research group’s existing research expertise, for example, through new methods and areas of expertise. Priority is given according to the range, depth, and up-to-dateness of competence.
  • the ability to build positive relationships with colleagues and students, show initiative, and demonstrate enthusiasm for the work of other people.
  • a high level of proficiency in spoken and written Swedish and English in terms of communication and teaching.

In the selection of eligible applicants, weight will be given to

  • experience with instruction in teacher education and/or a degree in teaching.
  • experience in communicating research findings to various target groups in society.
  • the ability for cooperation inside and outside the academic community.
  • the scope of one’s external network of international and domestic contacts within the discipline.
  • experience as a supervisor on a third-cycle level.

The appointment will be made following a qualitative holistic review of competence and skills to determine which applicant has the best ability to perform and develop the duties at hand as well as contribute to the positive development of Biology as a discipline. 

Terms

A permanent full-time position starting in autumn 2022, or by agreement. A probationary period may be required.

  • no more than 10 scientific publications and no more than 5 materials intended to convey knowledge, such as textbooks, computer programs for teaching, or popular science articles.
