Description
The subject of English at Karlstad University offers a wide array of courses at Bachelor’s, Master’s, and doctoral levels, including courses in all of the teacher training programmes, non-programme courses, courses in English for Specific Purposes (ESP), as well as in our new Master’s programme. We offer both on-campus courses and distance courses. Research in English at Karlstad University is specialised in both literature and linguistics. Staff members are active in various research environments, such as the Research Group for Culture Studies (KuFo) and the Centre for Language and Literature Education (CSL), which in turn is part of the Research Group on Subject-Specific Education (ROSE).
Duties
Duties are mainly focused on teaching within the subject of English. This includes teaching courses in subject-specific education and language proficiency, supervising Bachelor’s and Master’s theses, and supervising school internships in secondary schools. Duties also include course coordination. The successful candidate is expected to actively participate in developing the subject and in collaborating with the larger community, especially within the school sector. We also expect the successful candidate to actively contribute to the day-to-day activities at the department. Moreover, we value applicants with good interpersonal skills.
The successful candidate is also expected to play an active part in the subject’s research activities by applying for external research funding, individually or collectively, and by pursuing their own research projects. Time for research/continuing professional development is included in the position, with additional opportunities to increase the number of hours allocated to research and professional development through one of the University’s faculty funded research environments or through externally funded research.
Qualification requirements
To be eligible for the position of senior lecturer, applicants are required to hold a PhD in English with a specialisation in English literature and have demonstrated teaching expertise.
In line with Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure, the successful candidate must have the personal qualities required to perform the duties involved, as well as an equivalent to 15 ETCS in higher education pedagogy. In the absence of such training, employment may still be offered provided that the appointee undertakes to complete it during the first two years of employment.

This is a permanent full-time position starting 1 October 2022, or according to agreement.
A probationary period may be required.
In order to contribute to a good working environment and help further the subject’s activities, we expect the successful candidate to be present and actively participate in the day-to-day activities.
For permanent employment at Karlstad University, good knowledge of Swedish is normally required. A candidate who does not meet this requirement may still be hired provided they actively work towards acquiring this knowledge.
