Description
The subject Visual Arts in Theory and Practice at Karlstad University belongs to the Department of Artistic Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and offers first-cycle courses in the field of visual expressions with a specialisation in the theory and practice of visual arts. Teaching is focused on two tracks: one track specialised in visual arts education as part of the primary and pre-school education programme and the course Teaching the Visual Arts, and a second track with freestanding courses such as Visual Narrative, Visual Arts in Practice, The Philosophy of Photography, Images in Social Media, and Drawing and Visualisation Techniques. All courses include elements of both theory and visual expressions. The Department of Artistic Studies also comprises the subjects dance and music. The department has its own research cluster and Karlstad University also conducts research in, for example, art history and visual studies, pedagogical work, media and communication studies, and cultural studies.
Duties
As senior lecturer, you are expected to actively participate in the development of education and teaching, as well as contributing to mutual development of research and education. You are also expected to follow the development within the subject, as well as the social development in general of relevance to teaching and education.
Duties include teaching, educational development work, supervision, summative assessment, course coordination and course development, partly with regard to the teacher education programme and partly with regard to freestanding courses. Duties as senior lecturer also include initiating and conducting research that furthers and strengthens existing research at the department and the subject, in collaboration with other researchers and the larger community, nationally and internationally. The Local Working Time Agreement stipulates that 20% of a senior lectureship is earmarked for professional development and can be used for research. Teaching includes both on-campus courses and distance courses. We expect you to be a present and active part of the day-to-day operations and workplace community.
Qualification requirements
To be eligible for the position of senior lecturer, applicants are required to hold a BA in visual arts education and a PhD with a specialisation in visual arts education.
Applicants are also required to have documented teaching expertise and a completed course in higher education pedagogy. An applicant who has not completed a course in higher education pedagogy can still be eligible for the position provided that they use the time allotted for professional development to complete the course within two years of employment. Assessment criteria
In the assessment, special weight will be given to teaching expertise and the applicant’s experience of teaching at university level in the subject area of visual arts education. Considerable weight will be given to the ability to teach and supervise students in first- and second-cycle courses, as well as experience of academic administration. Considerable weight will also be given to experience of visual arts education in pre-school and primary school. Weight will be given to practical experience of visual expressions in the field of visual arts .
We value research experience in the subject. Another valuable qualification is knowledge of digital image techniques and how they can be applied in visual arts education. The position requires proficiency in Swedish and English. Special weight will be given to the ability to teach in Swedish since courses are held in Swedish. In the assessment, we will also consider personal qualities such as open-mindedness, ability to cooperate, take initiative and show commitment.
Terms
This is a permanent part-time (50%) position. A probationary period of 6 months may be required. Working hours may be increased in the future.
