Description

We are looking for an associate senior lecturer in gender studies, a discipline with a staff of ten at the Department of Social and Psychological Studies within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The department also includes psychology, social work, and sociology. There is a close connection at Karlstad University between the discipline of gender studies and the Centre for Gender Studies (CGF). CGF is organised in the following research areas: Masculinity Studies, Transgender Studies, Action for Organisational Change, and Gender, Health and Technology. All of the research areas are characterised by a broad theoretical approach as well as a combination of theoretical research and applied research and collaboration with the larger community to contribute to application of research findings and innovation. The discipline of gender studies offers first- and second-cycle education in gender studies, with special focus on CTF’s research. The range of courses include both on-campus and distance courses, in Swedish and English.

The position as associate senior lecturer is aimed at ambitious and qualified researchers within the discipline who are at the beginning of their career and who are looking to gain valuable qualifications in the gender studies.

Duties

The main duties include research in the subject of gender studies. Research will be conducted in one of the research streams of CGF (see above). Teaching in several parts of the discipline of gender studies may be required. Work mainly consists of independent research (75%) with the intention of strengthening CGF’s research platform. Duties also include teaching and supervision (25%) in freestanding courses, but contract education and teaching in adjacent disciplines at the university, such as sociology, may be required. The department houses transdisciplinary course activities in which participation may be required.

During the employment period, the associate senior lecturer is given the opportunity to further his/her skills as an independent researcher, as well as gaining additional qualifications in terms of both research and teaching expertise, in order to meet the requirements for a position as senior lecturer.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for the position, applicants are required to hold a PhD in gender studies or related discipline with a specialisation that clearly relates to CGF’s research platform. Applicants are also required to have a completed course in higher education pedagogy. In special circumstances, candidates who have not completed a course in higher education pedagogy may still be hired provided that they do so within two years of employment or that they apply for validation of prior learning.

Proficiency in spoken and written English and at least one Scandinavian language will also be required. An applicant who does not meet the requirement of proficiency in a Scandinavian language may still be hired provided they are able to actively acquire the language skills.

Pursuant to the Karlstad University Appointments Procedure, teachers must have the personal qualities required to perform the duties involved.

The position is primarily intended for applicants who have completed their PhD or acquired equivalent qualifications no longer than five years before the application deadline. If an applicant completed their PhD or equivalent qualifications more than five years ago, this requirement may be waived if there are special circumstances. By special circumstances, we refer to special grounds such as sick leave, parental leave or similar types of leave.

A complete list of eligibility requirements is available in Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure.

Assessment criteria

Preference is given to applicants with regard to the range and depth of the applicant’s academic competence, the scope of research and quality of the applicant’s research production, as well as the ability and willingness to build an academic career with the potential of contributing to the future development of both research and education.

Special weight will be given to the applicant’s experience of conducting prominent research of relevance to CGF’s research platform. Considerable weight will be given to documented ability to conduct independent research. Documented ability is demonstrated through publications and successful applications for external research funding. Considerable weight will also be given to the ability to create and run research networks, nationally and internationally. Experience from editorial research work is also a valuable qualification. Considerable weight will be given to the applicant’s research plan for independent research, development and collaboration, which the applicant must include in the application.

Teaching expertise will be assessed based on the ability to plan, conduct and evaluate teaching as well as the ability to supervise and assess students. Weight will be given to documented ability and experience of leading development processes for teaching and examinations in the subject or subject area in which the applicant specialises, and communicating these efforts to colleagues and students. Weight will also be given to a reflective approach to student learning and your role as a teacher. Research expertise will be assessed based on academic quality and the scope of the research in terms of depth and range within the subject of gender studies.

Considerable weight will be given to personal qualities such the ability to take initiative and cooperate with others, as well as the ability to build good relations with colleagues and students and thus contribute to a positive working environment. Considerable weight will also be given to the applicant’s sense of responsibility for their duties and ability to work independently and be a present part of the research environment. The ability to work with the larger community will also be of importance in the role as associate senior lecturer.
