Description

Swedish Language at Karlstad University offers comprehensive first- and second-cycle education. This includes freestanding courses in linguistics, with ambitions to expand the range of freestanding courses further. The subject is a big part of the teacher education programmes at Karlstad University, from pre-school to upper secondary school. In matters related to education and language learning, the subject collaborates with the research environment Centre for Language and Literature Education (CSL) at the university, which aims to initiate and develop practice-oriented research and development work.

Duties

The main duty of the associate senior lecturer will consist of research. At least 75% of working hours should be dedicated to research related duties. During the employment period, research should be focused on a project in Swedish language with relevance to subject-specific education. A research plan describing the intended research project should be included in the application.

The candidate is expected to participate in the subject’s research activities by applying for external research funding, individually or as part of a group, and by being an active part of the seminar activities at the department.

The position also includes a certain level of teaching and course coordination, as well as supervision and assessment in courses in Swedish included in the teacher education programmes and the subject’s freestanding courses at first-cycle level. Classes will be taught in Swedish.

During the employment period, the associate senior lecturer is given the opportunity to further his/her skills as an independent researcher, as well as gaining additional qualifications in terms of both research and teaching expertise, in order to meet the requirements for a position as senior lecturer.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for the position of associate senior lecturer in Swedish language with a specialisation in education, applicants are required to hold a PhD in Swedish language, Swedish with a specialisation in education (linguistics), or Scandinavian languages. An equivalence assessment can be made for a doctoral degree in another subject area with relevance to the position.

The position is primarily intended for applicants who have completed their PhD no longer than five years before the application deadline. If an applicant completed their PhD more than five years ago, this requirement may be waived if there are special circumstances. 

Pursuant to the Karlstad University Appointments Procedure, teachers must have the personal qualities required to perform the duties involved, as well as a completed course in higher education pedagogy. In special circumstances, the course in higher education pedagogy may be completed within two years of employment. 

Assessment criteria

Considerable weight will be given to research expertise, with preference given to research in subject-specific education. Priority is given according to the range, depth, and up-to-dateness of the applicant’s competence. Considerable weight will also be given to the academic quality, relevance in relation to subject-specific education, and viability of the applicant’s research plan. Considerable weight will be given to personal qualities such as the ability to cooperate, take responsibility, and show sound judgement and dedication, as well as a positive attitude towards colleagues and students.  We also value up-to-date experience of collaborating with the larger community and of disseminating findings of research and development work. A degree in education and/or experience of teaching in the national school system or higher education are also seen as valuable qualifications.

Terms

This is a temporary 4-year full-time (100%) position starting 1 August 2022, or according to agreement. At least 75% of working hours will consist of research. 

In order to contribute to a good working environment and help further the subject’s activities, we expect the associate senior lecturer to be a present and active part of the day-to-day operations and workplace community.

 Terms for promotion to senior lecturer 

Upon applying, an associate senior lecturer should be promoted to senior lecturer provided he or she is qualified for the position (Higher Education Ordinance chap. 4, sect. 4) and is deemed suitable following an assessment (Higher Education Ordinance chap. 4, sect. 4a). The applicant must have completed a prerequisite course in higher education pedagogy. For other eligibility requirements, refer to the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4, and Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure  The promotion to senior lecturer is a permanent position.

Eligibility for permanent employment at Karlstad University usually includes proficiency in Swedish and English. A candidate who does not meet this requirement may still be hired provided they actively work to acquire these language skills.

  • No more than 10 scientific publications and no more than 5 materials intended to convey knowledge, such as textbooks, computer programs for teaching, or popular science articles
  • Verification of a completed course in higher education pedagogy or an account of equivalent skills
  • An account of other experiences
  • Documented managerial, collaborative and administrative experience, as well as experience of development work
