The Department of Educational Studies, IPS, has a staff of 120 and conducts research, education at first, second and third cycle level, as well as third stream activities. The department focuses on conditions and forms of learning and knowledge processes in relation to societal development and in the context of the academic subjects of educational work, special education and sports science.

Special Education at the Department of Educational Studies

Special education looks at conditions of learning at the individual, group and organisational level where the prerequisite is diversity and variation rather than similarity. Inclusion in practice and theory are central themes in special education research the Department of Educational Studies. The subject is oriented towards special educational activities inside and outside of school and other educational institutions. Courses and study programmes are offered at both first and second cycle level. The subject is responsible for the Programme in Special Needs Training and, as of the autumn of 2020, the Master’s Programme in Special Education.

Duties

Research in special education at Karlstad University is currently in an expansion phase. We are looking for senior lecturers with excellent qualifications in special education, focusing on processes of inclusion in various educational activities at individual, group and organisational level that can help shape and develop the special education unit at the Department of Special Education Studies.

The position includes teaching, research and collaboration with the surrounding community. The main duties will be teaching, supervision and making summative assessments at second-cycle level within the Programme in Special Needs Training, the Master’s programme, and freestanding courses in special education at first and second cycle level. Supervising doctoral students may also be included.

The position also includes acting as course director and working with educational development. Teaching and summative assessments in the subject as part of different teacher training programmes may also be included. Duties also include research, publications, active participation in the research environments and seminar activities of the department, as well as actively seeking external research funding, individually or as part of a research group.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for a senior lecturer position at the department, applicants are required to hold a PhD or equivalent academic qualifications in a discipline that is relevant to the position. Equal weight will be given to pedagogical and research skills. Applicants are required to have completed a course in higher education pedagogy. Since the language of instruction is primarily Swedish and potentially sometimes English, you are required to have a good command of written and spoken Swedish and English.

In special circumstances, the course in higher education pedagogy may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment. (For more information on qualification requirements, see the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4)

Assessment criteria

In the selection process, the following assessment criteria will be taken into account. Please note that all qualifications that you wish to refer to must be verified by grades, certificates or equivalent. Unverified qualifications will not be considered and your entire application may be revoked.

Documented teaching skills and skills in planning and developing courses at the first and second level within the subject area are of special weight. A Postgraduate Diploma in Special Educational Needs or other training within the subject as well as professional experience will be given considerable weight. We also view other degrees in education and production of study resources within the subject areas as valuable qualifications.

Documented research skills in language, writing and reading development and relational pedagogy for students in complicated learning situations are of considerable weight. Considerable weight will also be given to documented research skills in the area of special education in general, publications in scientific journals and the ability to obtain external research funding. The assessment of research expertise will also include the candidate’s ability to disseminate research to the surrounding community.

Documented experience of work at third-cycle level, as well as documented skills in managing and administering research and education are considered valuable qualifications.

Considerable weight will be given to the candidate’s ability to cooperate, foster good relationships with colleagues and students, and show initiative.

Terms

This is a permanent full-time position (100%) starting at the earliest convenience. A probationary period is required.
