The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science hereby invites applications for a associate senior lectureship in Computer Science with a specialisation in networked systems and software for healthcare. The employment as associate senior lecturer aims to attract ambitious and qualified researchers in the area that are in their early careers, with the main goal to let them advance their competence in research and education.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science consists of two research subjects, Mathematics and Computer Science, and has a staff of around 90 people. The research and education in Computer Science is focused on distributed systems and communications, security and privacy, and software quality. The Department works closely with international, national, and regional partners from the academic community as well as private businesses. Digitalisation of healthcare is an important area of collaboration where computer science is one of the driving partners within the Digital Well Arena project, a ten years strategic collaboration between the university, partners from businesses, the region, and a number of municipalities.

As associate senior lecturer, you will be an important person for developing the collaboration within Digital Well Arena. You will also be part of and strengthen one of the established research groups in Computer Science,

• DISCO (Distributed Systems and Communication), whose research includes internet protocols, wireless systems, edge/cloud services, and next generation technologies, such as programmable networks, SDN/NFV, and 5G/6G.
• PriSec (Privacy and Security), currently focusing on different aspects of cybersecurity such as network security, privacy-enhancing technologies, and data security and privacy.
• SQuaD (Software Quality and Digital Modernisation), whose areas of study include software architecture degradation and other forms of technical debt, quality assurance techniques, such as testing, for long-living systems, and the design and evolution of security- and privacy-critical systems.

Research is primarily funded through external projects, such as international and national projects funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020, the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research, the Knowledge Foundation, and the Vinnova. The associate senior lecturer will also play a vital role in the continued evolution of the Department’s education in computer science. We are looking for a driven candidate with a desire to develop future research and teaching related to networked systems and software for healthcare.

Duties

The candidate will perform innovative research that improves public health using digital technologies. The candidate is expected to further the evolution of Digital Well Arena and the Department by conducting high-quality research within a multi-disciplinary research group and in close collaboration with regional, national and international partners. The candidate is expected to expand our international networks and contribute to an increase in research funds on a national and international level. The research is expected to strengthen one or more of the Department’s research groups.

The candidate is also expected to actively contribute as a teacher for first-cycle and second-cycle courses. Duties also include course administration and development, and degree project supervision on first-cycle and second-cycle levels.

Research time of at least 75% is included in the employment.

The candidate collaborates with the surrounding society and work to ensure that the knowledge and skills available at the university benefit society.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for the position of associate senior lecturer, applicants are required to hold a PhD in Computer Science, or equivalent scientific qualifications in networked systems and software for healthcare or a related field. The position is primarily intended for applicants who have completed their PhD no longer than five years before the application deadline, or who have acquired the corresponding competence in that time. If an applicant completed their PhD or corresponding competence more than five years ago, this requirement may be waived if there are special circumstances.

The position requires proficiency in Swedish and English. Candidate who are not proficient in Swedish may still be hired provided they work actively to acquire proficiency in Swedish.

Pursuant to the Karlstad University Appointments Procedure, applicants must have a completed course in higher education pedagogy. In special circumstances, the course in higher education pedagogy may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment. Assessment criterias

Special weight will be given to research in computer science applied to eHealth and to the range, depth and quality of an applicant’s scientific work.

Special weight will be given to how well the applicant can be expected to contribute new knowledge and experience to one or more of the Department’s research groups

Considerable weight will be given to documented scientific skill and the applicant’s experience with national and international research and innovation projects in collaboration with partners from the academic community and from private businesses.

Of considerable weight is the ability to develop such scientific and pedagogical skill required for a senior lectureship position, as well as shown ability and desire for an academic career, as well as potential and desire to collaboratively drive future development of research and education.

Considerable weight will be given to personal qualities such as the ability to cooperate, sound judgement, responsibility, dedication, and a positive attitude towards colleagues and students.

Of merit is recent experience of collaboration with society and communication/publishing research and development works.

Terms

Fixed-term employment of 4 years full time, preliminary starting date 2022-09-01 or per agreement.

Terms for promotion to senior lecturer

Upon applying, an associate senior lecturer should be promoted to senior lecturer provided he or she is qualified for the position (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 4, Sect. 4) and is deemed suitable following an assessment (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 4, Sect. 4a). The applicant must have completed a prerequisite course in higher education pedagogy.

The promotion evaluation will be partly based on the applicant’s ability to independently initiate and execute research of high scientific quality, published in peer-reviewed international journals and conference proceedings. The outcome of the evaluation will also partly be based on the applicant’s ability to lecture in Swedish.

The employment as senior lecturer is a permanent position.
