Description

The Faculty of Health, Science and Technology invites applications for a doctoral studentship in Physics, condensed matter theory at the Department of Engineering and Physics.

The Department of Engineering and Physics is a diverse and international workplace with a friendly and inspiring atmosphere. The theoretical physics group has a broad scope of interests encompassing research on material science, soft condensed matter, quantum phases of matter, high-energy and mathematical physics. The theory group is actively involved in collaborations with the experimental physics community at Karlstad University.

We are reaching out to prospective students interested in analytical and computational investigations of emergent collective phenomena in the quantum realm. More specifically, the project will focus on non-equilibrium dynamical properties of discrete quantum gauge theories. The research project is a continuation of long-term investigations of discrete gauge theories which recently came into the spotlight of the experimental quantum simulation community. We have active international collaborations with colleagues in Germany, Israel, Spain and the USA which the candidate will be encouraged  to participate in.   More information about the research on quantum phases of matter at Karlstad University can be found at https://sites.google.com/view/quantum-matter-kau/home

Duties

The main task is to participate in the project “Discrete gauge theories coupled to matter- towards exotic quantum dynamics of fractionalized phases”, funded by Swedish Research Council.

A doctoral student is mainly expected to engage in doctoral studies. The doctoral programme consists of 240 higher education credits, including the doctoral thesis, and 120 higher education credits for a Degree of Licentiate. A doctoral student works independently and is prepared to further the work of the subject and department in addition to being prepared for an active role in teaching and administration. Such duties cannot constitute more than 20% of full-time.

You are expected to actively participate in the day-to-day activities and the workplace community to promote a positive work environment and operational development.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for third-cycle studies, the applicant must meet the general and specific entry requirements (Higher Education Ordinance, Ch. 7 sect. 35).

To meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have second-cycle qualifications, completed at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 credits at Master level, or who have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad. (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 7, Sect. 39)

To meet the specific entry requirements for third-cycle studies in physics, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle level degree in Physics, with a specialization in a relevant area for doctoral studies in physics. Eligible are also applicants with other degrees at second-cycle level, with at least 60 higher education credits in a relevant area for third-cycle studies in Physics, for example, a degree of Master of Science in Engineering Physics or teacher degree with relevant specialization in Physics.

Admission and assessment criteria

To be eligible for doctoral studies the applicant must be judged to have the ability required to pursue the programme successfully (Higher Education Ordinance, Ch. 7, sect. 35). Admission is based on individual assessment.

Assessment is based on the following criteria:
All applicants must have a very good command of English, oral and written.
Qualifications that are of a special weight in the assessment:

  • successfully completed Diploma work in Physics or in Engineering Physics on a topic that is relevant to the PhD project
  • successfully completed relevant courses at university level in theoretical physics
  • practical experience in coding

Personal qualities, such as a positive attitude, good ability to collaborate, and excellent written and oral communication skills, will be given considerable weight in the assessment.

Terms

Upon admission to doctoral studies, a studentship position will be offered (Higher Education Ordinance, Ch. 5, sect.3). The position comprises four years of full-time studies, or five years of 80% studies and 20% teaching or other departmental duties. The position is fixed-term. Start date by agreement.

The salary for the doctoral studentship corresponds to the standard level of salary for doctoral students at Karlstad University.
