The department of Geography, Media and Communication is accepting applications for a senior lectureship in Media and Communication Studies. The department comprises Media and Communication Studies, Human Geography, Geography, and Tourism Studies. Our visitors often remark on our excellent work climate and world-class fika. Description

Media and Communication Studies is part of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and boasts an educational and research environment with strong appeal. The department offers bachelor-level studies within several programmes as well as master-level programmes. Transnational contacts and global perspectives are fundamental in our work. Bachelor studies are primarily conducted in our two major study programmes - Public Relations and Media and Communication. The latter features two tracks - Visual Communication and Design and Digital Media and Analysis (focused on theoretical and practical analysis of media content and use in digital environments, such as mobile and social media).

Research in Media and Communication Studies is conducted in two profiled research groups at the department: research environment Geomedia http://www.kau.se/geomedia/ and the research centre NODE (The Ander Centre for Research on News and Opinion in the Digital Era) https://www.kau.se/media/node.

Duties

Your duties at the subject will primarily consist of teaching within study programmes, freestanding courses, and occasionally commissioned education. Teaching duties will primarily consist of teaching digital media and analysis. Duties include teaching, supervision, examinations, course coordination, and course development as well as active involvement in furthering the subject and department with regard to teaching and community collaboration. The Local Working Time Agreement stipulates that 20% of a senior lectureship is earmarked for professional development and can be used for research. This percentage can be extended with external funding.

Entry requirements/prerequisites

To be eligible for a senior lectureship, applicants are required to hold a PhD in Media and Communication Studies or an academically adjacent, and for the position relevant, subject, have completed a course in higher education pedagogy or acquired equivalent skills in some other way, and have demonstrated teaching expertise. An applicant who has not completed a course in higher education pedagogy may still be hired if they commit to doing so within two years of employment using the time earmarked for professional development. Pursuant to the Karlstad University Appointments Procedure, teachers must have the personal qualities required to perform the duties involved.

Assessment criteria

Particular weight will be given to both broad and in-depth expertise in Media and Communication Studies, as well as documented experience in teaching at the bachelor and master level. You will be expected to teach and supervise in a variety of courses. We also give particular weight to having both theoretical and practical knowledge of computer assisted, digital methods for analysis of media content and usage. Additionally, we give particular weight to good collaborative skills, since much of the work is done in various teams.

Particular weight will be given to you having a scientific profile that relates to the subject of digital media and data analysis or adjacent subjects such as Information Systems, digital humanities or science and technology studies, and that you have the ability to teach about digital cultures, social media and web production. Additionally, considerable weight will be given to you having worked independently with both qualitative and quantitative research methods and have knowledge of, and having been leading in current method development with regards to data collection and analysis in digital environments (for example, automated content analysis, data visualisation and digital ethnography.).

Considerable weight will also be given to pedagogical skills and experience of pedagogical development work. Since courses are in both Swedish and English, we give considerable weight to being able to speak both Swedish and English, as well as having experience in teaching in both languages. Additionally, we give considerable weight to you having experience in successful applications for research funding and involvement in national and international academic networks. We also give weight to the ability to work independently and take initiative.

The following are considered valuable qualifications:

  • experience in organisational development and leadership
  • experience in teaching both master and bachelor level courses
  • international experience
  • experience in course development and web-based teaching,
  • experience with collaboration with the larger community.

Terms

This is a permanent full-time position starting at the earliest convenience, as negotiated. A probationary period may be required.
